In Chapter nine of “all quiet on the western front” the narrator Paul Baumer gets involved in a hand-to-hand combat with a French soldier. This is the climax of the novel “all quiet on the western front”. This situation impacted Baumer because it was a kill or be killed situation although he did the correct thing he felt really bad. The effect war has on its soldiers is that they are in physical danger and can be blown up in pieces any moment, although the main concern in there mind is to survive.
In Chapter ten of “all quiet on the western front” Paul and his comrades while guarding the abandoned village took advantage of eating and sleeping. These were two things that soldiers weren’t getting enough of. Since they have access to food they take advantage of it. Paul’s decision to stay and cook the pancakes while bombs are falling is very risking; since pancakes are his favorite meal he might as well die the next day and have it once again. This Shows that Paul is risking his life in able to survive in the war.
In Chapter twelve of “all quiet on the western front” the effects the war has on the men fighting it is that is traumatizes them and destroy selfhood. The war has destroyed Paul into pieces. Paul doesn’t see the point of living anymore because all his comrades have died and is all by him self. The war also affects him because while he was at the front fighting for country him mom was home dying of tuberculosis, he could of instead have been helping her. The war does many bad things to people and tares Paul’s life apart, which he says “ Let the months and years come, they can take nothing more from me, they can take nothing more”. This shows the reader how alone Paul feels and how he doesn’t fear death anymore.
