men starving, they grew weak and lost strength to fight. those who could survive on little food, ended up dying from little fighting strength. When the Allies won the war, spirits were lifted and celebrations were growing across the globe.
Before the winnings, the US had established a Christmas Truce in 1914 to send spirit to the battlefields on Christmas day. So that way those firing guns and cannons, could get a feel of home that included being bundled in warmth and the love of family. Those back home also tried to send as many care packages as they physically could. In them included; photos, gum, liquor, tobacco, socks, and chocolate. Socks were one of the mainly distributed items, because when the men left they usually only carried one pair of socks. Which was on their foot, so instead of growing mold and creating holes in them, many socks were sent throughout and all around the battlefield. In the book, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” boots were passed around. Thus showing how little amount of shoes were also involved. many war men were barefoot and stepped on various amounts of glass and pricker
bushes. When the war finished suicides increased by approximately eleven percent. With this the gore of the past fighting triggered many ending up in an insane asylum. Likewise, in the story, Paul’s father was consistent with the questions. Paul didn’t want to relive what had happened. One of the causes for him liking his mother more than his father. Another was because she took care of him most of his life other than being in war. He didn’t want to mention the site of his dead roommates or what he saw in the enemies eyes. The enemies were as frightened as he was, the same age, and fighting for their own country. Just to prove a point.
