The poet forms a mental image in our mind how the slaves tried to read, like picturing uncle Caldwell “greased the pages of his books and hid in his hat”, and how Mr. Turner’s Ben “heard the children spell” and “leaned to read ‘em well.” These descriptions actually put images in our head and we can visualize them vividly.
