Alternative Therapies for Urinary Problems
Problem Statement
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) defines complementary and alternative therapies (CAM) as the use of health care practices and products that are not considered to be part of mainstream health care practices (Jackson, Taubenberger, Botelho, Joseph, & Tennstedt, 2012). These articles ranged in dates from 1967-2011 (Jackson et al., 2012). Although that is a large gap of time and research articles older than five years are considered outdated, old research articles can be helpful in qualitative studies. Some credible resources that were cited include the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the American Journal of Public Health (Jackson et al., 2012). Jackson, Taubenberger, Botelho, Joseph, and Tennstedt (2012) used open-ended survey questions that were transcribed word for word (Jackson et al., 2012). The researchers felt that this would allow them to analyze all the data most effectively. The article consisted of direct quotes from the study participants. Also the data analyzed were organized into charts which were present within the article. The information determined in this study can be used to help health care professionals determine the best methods of CAM to recommend and also discover if there is a need for use of conventional medicine along with CAM. This information can reduce healthcare costs, improve effectiveness of treatments, and improve patient
