Across the poem “ Do I dare?” (Eliot 38,46,121) and “Should I presume?” (Eliot 54,61,68) appears multiple times. The reason for the repetition of these rhetorical questions is to emphasize the question if he should do something or dare to do it. These questions support how ambiguous Prufrock is in making choices in his life. Critics that analyzed this specific poem found the repetitions was confusing. “The narrative line founders and is immediately bemused by the repetitions of “ Do I dare ?” and “Do I dare ?” (Scobie). Prufrock questions himself to express his suppressed feelings to this woman that he likes. “ First, does he dare to make declaration of love, and , if not, does he then dare to flee down the stairs after he rang the doorbell, knowing that the subject of his affections may spot the “bald spot in the middle” of his hair” (Pagnattaro). The fear of rejection deprives him confessing his true feelings, therefore he imagines himself being old, bald and frail. In the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock fear was portrayed an abundance of times throughout the poem. According to modernism “ Other characteristics of later modernism are increasing self awareness, introspection, and openness to the unconscious and to humanity's darker fears and instincts” (modernism). Now the postwar effect is in progress because WWI ended. Brings so light and happiness in the modernism poets writing. T.S Eliot wrote another great work that well repressing the post war effect. “ The outbreak of World War I had a sobering effect, however, and post war modernism. As seen in such as T. S. Eliots’ The Wasteland, reflected the prevailing senses of fragmentation and disillusion” ( modernism).The two modern day songs that manifest the similar the of the fear of rejection “ Things I’ll Never Say by Avril Lavigne in the lyrics “ (Cause) I'm feeling nervous Trying to be so perfect Cause I know you're worth it” (Things I'll Never Say) and “ I Want to Hold Your Hand by The Beatles in the lyrics “ And when I touch you I feel happy Inside its such a feeling that my love I can't hide” (Beatles). In the Avril Lavigne song her lyrics explains that she's nervous and she wants to be perfect for him just as Prufrock was nervous to confuses his affections to the woman.
