They do so by staying righteous not losing sight of what is important, freedom from the island. Achieving this goal was proven difficult, due to the strong pull the boys felt for Jack and the temptation he offers them. Although most of the boys lost sight of the true ambition to escape the clutches of the island Ralph and Piggy stayed righteous to their original beliefs as well as Sam and Eric. Ambition is the deciding factor on if one will take a path of darkness or light. Individuals are usually attracted to the exhilaration of doing something against the rules, of course not everyone feels this way but in the case of Lord of the Flies, everyone (except Simon) at one point did something that went against society. Temptation (the serpent) has always been the stronger being, if you tease someone with something they desire they cannot resist. Within Lord of the Flies there are many biblical references. In a lot of ways Jack represents the temptation of savagery that pulls at the boys he bribes them to join his tribe with the promise of meat and fun, a temptation many cannot and do not refuse, this demonstrates the ambition of Jack, his pull towards killing and having power over others drives him from the laws that make civilization what it is into something more sinister. Jack uses his newfound power (control of the meat) to obtain followers whom are willing to do his beck and call if they get fed. Thus, the divide between followers and leaders is clear to see. Ambition expresses how individuals will sacrifice their civilized behaviour if and only if their pull to temptation out ways all reason. Jack had a very ad hockery approach throughout the novel because of his impulsive behaviour.
