Most Misunderstood Breed
Here’s a little history on the American Pit Bull Terrior, dating back to late seventeen hundreds, the Pit Bull Terriors were used for bull baiting, hunting, and as family companions. When used as baiting dogs they were trained to latch on to the heads of bulls, bears, and other large animals. This was banned in the early eighteen hundreds and ever since then the notorious dog fighting had begun. Now, dog fighting has been banned and is a felony offense in all fifty states. Many dog breeds have been used for hunting and fighting, and are still used as family dogs today. For example, retrievers, pointers, spaniels, bulldogs and many more. These breeds were created

Sergeant Stubby was his name and he survived being wounded twice, captured a German spy, and lastly saved his platoon from poison gas (A Brief History of the American Pit Bull Terrier). This is what was known and heard about the breed back then and now the media only can talk about how a Pit bull attacked a dog and some kids. The media including television, radio, and social media sources. They never talk about other dog breeds doing the same thing. How about the collie who bit the police officer and not the Pit bull. How about the Pit bulls that are used for therapy dogs at shelters to mentally and emotionally heal abused children? What about the Pit bulls that are helping soldiers that have come home from war cope with post-traumatic stress disorder? There are thousands of stories of Pit bulls doing things, that I guess the media does not find interesting. Here’s one example, Bryan Bickell, a player on the Chicago Blackhawks, started a foundation for Pit bulls that work with abused children and it was only shown on the news because he was raising money at a restaurant. All they show is Bryan Bickell making pitas. There was not one picture of the breed with children or of the breed at all. It just goes to show how the media will shelter the viewers from seeing what the breed can actually

In There is no need for pit bulls by Dr. David A. Billmire he talks about how pit bulls are not needed in today’s society and how they shouldn’t be pets. He starts out his story talking about his past experiences with dog bites. Most of which were caused by a dog that was provoked, but then he states, “In every instance the dog involved was a pit bull or a pit bull mix.” Billmire is now stating that every dog bit that he saw was in fact from a pit bull. He wants to stress his point later on when he states, “Pit bulls were bred to fight and kill … there is no need for any dog with the characteristics.”…

The American Staffordshire Terrier (also known as Pit Bull) is believed to be a man-eating beast. But is this breed all it's made out to be? The Pit Bull started in the Unites States; it has been developed since the early 1800's as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Although the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the development of the American Staffordshire Terrier is the story of a truly American breed. This type of dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed this country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead, and general companionship. A number of the early ancestors were also developed for…

Despite the negativity surrounding this breed of dogs, Pit Bulls are one of the most popular breeds in America. They come in several combinations of coats. The breeds originally bred for blood sports, such as bear baiting and bull baiting. It was not until later in their history dog fighting appeared. In the early days of dogfighting, before it became outlawed, dogfighting was an organized sport. “Handlers had to be able to jump in the ring and separate the fighters, and then treat the wounded dogs after the fights were over. Dogs that showed aggression toward humans, even in the middle of a fight, were usually killed and never bred.” (Pitbulls.org, © 2010).This breed has a high prey drive, perhaps from coming from terrier (example Scotland terriers) lineage. Generally, Pit bulls“were used for herding, hunting or guardian purposes, but most were bred and kept primarily as companions” (Pitbulls.org, © 2010).…

According to statistical data posted on Barkpost.com, pit bulls are the #1 shelter intake dog and the #1 most frequently euthanized dog in shelters for no other reason than overcrowding. Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in this country and of those 1.2 million, approximately 40% of them are pit bulls (Moore). Only 1 in every 600 pit bulls in this country will find a loving home (Prasad). Advocates, rescue groups, shelters and animal rights groups like the ASPCA are likely unable to be completely objective when it comes to these dogs who they often see abused, mistreated and dumped at their shelters only to ultimately die due to overcrowding. The emotional toll these workers must endure is unimaginable. However, as a pit bull owner myself, I worry when an uninformed or neutral audience is not given the full picture on something like the responsibility of caring for such a controversial pet. I cringe when I see pit bull puppies intentionally misidentified as “easier” breeds such as Labrador retrievers or boxer mixes in an attempt to find homes for less adoptable puppies labeled as pit bulls. I myself, was led to believe by my rescue group that I was adopting a vizsla mix puppy. As the owner of a purebred vizsla, I…

How would you feel if a pet you had since you were a child could no longer be by your side because the county you live in does not allow them anymore? This scenario is very possible due to the Breed Specific Legislation law (BSL). This law regulates which animals are not allowed in a certain area. BSL began in the 1980’s when the number of dog bites went up significantly in the U.S. As people noticed this trend, states began becoming stricter with their breed regulatory laws. The laws were really aimed at pit bull terriers and their mixes even though the law was supposed to be aimed at “dangerous dogs to society.” BSL is not limited to just dogs. Other animals are included in this…

There are many misconceptions about the canine breed “pitbull.” Though believe it or not, there is no such thing. Typically, there are around three to five different breeds that are considered pitbulls. The American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and the Bull Terrier are the breeds that are considered pitbulls (Alvarado. 2016).…

One of the most serious threats that pit bulls face is breed specific legislation (BLS), often referred to as breed banning. A breed ban is a law where certain breeds of dog, often “pit bulls” are banned in certain areas. Breed specific legislation has been “developed as a reaction to the sense of a growing dog bite problem in communities (whether real or perceived)” (Wisch, 2008). American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and mixed-breed dogs with the characteristics of these breeds are all often categorized as pit bulls under these laws. In reality as reported by an article by Erin McCormick and Tom Wallack in the San Francisco Chronicle, “After all, German shepherds killed more people than any other dog in the late 1970s, when many people favored the breed for its fierce reputation. Then, for two…

Bull and terrier breeds were created in early 19th century in England for sports such as bull and bear baiting. This was where pits were bred to bite and hold bulls, bears, and other large animals around the face. When this sport was ruled off and became illegal in 1835, dog fighting came active. Pit bulls were used by Greeks as shepherds and guard dogs. In 1898 the UKC, Britain’s equivalent to the AKC,…
