They went from being under a monarchy to republicanism. "Everyone" was to have equal rights, laws to protect them, and representation. The war was declared in defense of the natural rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The war did little in protecting these rights, as like "no taxation without representation", or not granting many blacks their freedom as promised before the war. The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution for the Untied States of America, and established the United States as a confederation. The articles allowed the government to pursue war and peace, became in charge of all foreign relationships, regulate trade, and establish a post office, Most important they are not allowed to collect any taxes. Most people the colonies still had the same social status. There still were slaves, only white men who owned land could vote, women were still suppressed, and poor were still poor. Though most of these problems were resolved many years later there was no immediate change. Women who made up about half the population at the time had benefited very little from the revolution. Thousands of women had helped in the war as cooks and nurses. There are stories of brave individual women like Deborah Samson who actually joined the fight in the revolution, but they are only stories. Despite their contribution to independence, women remained invisible in the new society. Slavery was weakened by revolution, but it had in more ways more blatant in the new society. The Declaration of Independence made many slaves believe that they can have freedom, either by enlisting or escaping in the Continental Army or in the some state militias. Revolutionary leaders realized the hypocrisy of wanting liberty for all people while keeping people in servitude some of the loudest voices like Jefferson and Washington kept slaves all their lives. The revolution had a negative impact on native Americans. Most tribes had fought with British, hoping for the English to win.
