As an American merchant, the trade with Europe is very critical to the U.S economy. We would sell crops and natural resources to our European customers, and we buy manufacturing goods from Europe. Things began to fall apart after the American Revolution, both American and European ship were being attacked by pirates when we traveled through the Mediterranean Sea.
