“American Trash” Analysis The band Innerpartysystem started forming their group between the years 2000 and 2007. They had originally gone by the name The Takeover, until their manager ran across some conflicts with the lack of originality of the name, so they changed it to Innerpartysystem. The band’s name Innerpartysystem comes from a reference in the book “1984“by George Orwell. This book describes certain social classes such as “ Inner Party “ which represents oligarchy or a form of power structure where power effectively rests with a small group of people. The band describes this as being the name that embodies everything they were looking for. They described that they enjoyed the thought of creating an over stimulating elitist environment that they are trying to invite everyone into. The genre of music this band plays can be categorized as electro house and/or dance punk. This is evidential in their music videos, as their style can be considered that of the punk rock style and the beat of their music is both electro and rock. Also, the band mentions their musical influences to be musicians and bands such as David Bowie, Foo Fighters, Radio head and Lamb Of God. All these musicians and bands bring evidence to their punk rock style and genre. Other key players in this influential role are Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk, both being electronic music genres. Both of these music genres are popular with younger generations, so it’s appropriate to say that their intended audience is youths and young adults between the ages of 15 and 24. Their song, American Trash, was first released on May 25th, 2010 and was written by band member Patrick Nissley. The song highly reflects on the bands view of American culture, which they depict to be a bleak one. The band implies that Americans only think about themselves and they highlight the ignorance of the everyday consumer. That being said, the theme is anti-consumerism. The
