Amistad By Stephen Spielberg
Amistad was produced and released by Stephen Spielberg in 1997. Many of the main characters from the film Amistad are portrayed by famous actors such as Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, Matthew McConaughey, and Morgan Freeman. The main theme of the film depicts how you should never lose hope in the face of adversity. One of the main characters of the film who was portrayed by Djimon Hounsou as Cinque a member of a tribe captured by a neighboring African tribe and being sold into slavery. Along Cinques journey as a slave he endured many obstacles such as seeing his friends or family members die at the hands of mercenaries. The film depicts how slaves were illegally captured and sold into slavery against their own will. The film starts …show more content…
The people also spoke in very realistic language such as the Spanish, Mende, and English. The most influential scene was the flashback of how Cinque was captured and they had to endure watching the man getting whipped. The blood and the hurt and the pain displayed on the man’s face and the others faces was very realistic and very important to understanding the severity of how sometimes illegal slave trade looked. The setting where the detained Africans were being held in the jail was poorly executed because it just seemed very odd and out of order. It seemed as if the Africans never ate and they were being treated as if they were puppets of the court. Many times you would often see Cinque attempting to understand what Mr. Baldwin was saying in a language that he didn’t speak. The film was historically accurate with things such as the illegal slave trade and people like Queen Isabella and John Quincy Adams. The actions people took and the battles that ensued after and before the illegal slave trade began also seemed very accurate. The laws and the actions people took during the court proceedings are very different from the laws and actions we have today in ways like once a person has been tried for a crime they cannot be tried again because a ruling has already been granted and is recognized as final under the

Amistad, directed by Steven Spielberg, displays the fierce determination of 53 African abductees and their compelling desire to return home. Led by Cinqué (or Sengbe), a man longing to see his wife and son in Sierra Leone again, the men aboard the ship La Amistad rebelled against the Spanish slave traders who guarded them from escape. Using sugar cane knives stolen from cargo aboard the ship, the Africans defeated the gun-wielding Spaniards. With ambitions of returning to West Africa, they eventually ended up off the coast of Long Island instead of the initial destination, a Cuban port. Even as the native Africans adjusted to an entirely different life in America, their African identity still remained apparent throughout the film.…

The most surprising thing about this film was the sheer brutality directed at the Native Americans in both real life and in film. In Reel Injun, I saw so many different times where the Natives were ostracized, beaten, and even killed. People started bringing the films to life and pushing stereotypes onto these people. When they fought back, we labeled them as wild and savage and ignored them as we took over their lands and homes. The clips in the film where we see glimpses of movies portraying them as the ones attacking us for no reason only further lead to violence and hatred. It was scary to see the image change from noble to savage so quickly.…

Since it is an autobiography and the author gives his own experiences such as “And after a sale, it was not uncommon to see negroes taken from their wives, wives taken from their husbands, and children from their parents, and sent off to other islands, and wherever else their merciless lords choose; and probably never more during life see each other!” (93), I found it believable and accurate.…

The film “12 Years a Slave” is a work of authentic fiction taking into account the occasions set out in Northup's book. To make a story circular segment and to fit the story into a two-hour film, various occasions portrayed in the book have been disposed of and others have been extended together. A couple events by one individual have been ascribed to another or scenes have been added to bolster the story. Other than the prelude, the scenes before the kidnaping, the murder of a slave by a mariner on the Orleans, and the drinking tea scene with Mistress Shaw, the scenes demonstrated in the film were taken from the book or are sensible rough guesses of occasions that could have happened given current-day comprehension of the historical backdrop…

First I’ll start off by saying this was a good movie and it had my attention from start to finish. In is movie there was a man by the name of Solomon Northup who was a free slave born in New York. Solomon had a wife and two kids, and was also a great violin player. Solomon life seemed like it was all good until he ran into the wrong group of people. Because he was a good violinist people wanted to hear him so he got this offer from two white guys to work for them and make more money. And what he thought to be a good idea turned out to be a bad one. Solomon rides with the guys to a gathering where he was supposed to meet people he would be working for. Well it turned out that the two guys was setting him up to be sold into slavery, which is exactly what happened. He was slipped something in his drink that knocked him out and when he had awaken he was in chains and shackles. He was then terrified because just yesterday he was a free man and now he’s considered a slave. Guys come into the room where he is and tells him he is a Georgia runaway slave. And when he tried to explain he was a free man he was beaten by the white guy. Next he was sent outside to get washed up where he were joined by others who were also going to be sold. Next he was loaded on a ship and shipped across the waters. The first plantation he arrived at was owned by a guy called Master Ford. There Solomon would cut can and harvest it. This guy by the name of Timmy didn’t like the idea that Solomon was educated so every chance he got he picked at Solomon until one day Timmy attempted to whip Solomon for no reason and Solomon ended up taking the whip from Timmy and hitting him with it. Timmy left and returned with two other guys attempting to hang Solomon but one guy stopped them but still left Solomon partially hanging until Master Ford returned. Solomon was then shipped to another plantation where there he had to pick cotton. He got beaten…

In 1841, in Northern America, free blacks were not uncommon. In fact, the number of free blacks in the north began to outnumber the slaves. In 1830, 11 years before Northop’s story took place, “there were over 122,000 free blacks in these states and about 2700 slaves, almost all of them in New Jersey, which was the last northern state to begin to end slavery” CITATION Finkleman \l 1033 (Finkleman and Malone). Of course, there were still some boundaries set by many people, such as blacks shouldn’t shop in white shops. This is made apparent in one of the first scenes of the film where Solomon and his family walk into a shop, owned by a white man, to buy a new bag. The man obviously has no problem with this but some people would. This intrigues a younger black man into wanting to step foot into the shop…
