Northup was bought by a kind man named William Prince Ford , but was sold because of financial exigency to John M. Tibaut, but ford still obtained 40% ownership of Northup. . Northup was Tibauts only slave. When tibaut tried to whip Northup, he resisted and fought Tibuats, when tibaut went for help, northup fled to ford for help who mad tibaut to lease or sell Northup. In April 1843 Northup was sold by Ford and Tibaut to sadistic Edwin Epps. Epps had Northup do many things ranging from being an artisan slave, to a field worker, and sometime Epps would put northup in charge of the other slaves.
