In the late 19th century Viennese neurologist Sigmund Freud developed a theory of personality and a system of psychotherapy known as psychoanalysis. According to this theory, people are strongly influenced by unconscious forces, including innate sexual and aggressive drives. Sigmund Freud compared the human mind to an iceberg. The tip above the water represents consciousness, and the vast region below the surface symbolizes the unconscious mind. Of Freud’s three basic personality structures—id, ego, and superego—only the id is totally unconscious. Freud believed that everyone experienced the neurosis, basically physiques development always develops based on conflict pattern. (Djokosujatno, 2002: 43)
On Adi Kristina and Team’s hands out, they criticized the Mona Lisa smile movie for knowing the undercover purposes which experienced by the main characters on that movie. According to them, the characters analysis is the one of Psychoanalysis approach besides the cinema elements such as director, audiences, process of movie making, etc. In this case, the important thing which analyzed is the characters text or their script as a text manifest for recovering the hidden meaning of that text.
Oedipal Complex Freud claimed that in nearly all cases the boy represses the desire for his mother and the jealousy toward his father. As a result of this unconscious experience, Freud believed, a boy with an Oedipus complex feels guilt and experiences strong emotional conflicts. Two main characters on the Mona Lisa Smile, Catherine Watson and Betty experienced Oedipal Complex which can analyze by the psychoanalysis theory.
