Willa Cather once said, “The end is nothing; the road is all.” But what does that mean? The most overt answer is that it doesn't matter where one ends up in life, it's how one gets there that counts. But, I think it goes deeper than that. To me, this means that the path you take is, in itself, simultaneously the beginning, middle, and end, and ultimately I agree with Cather, that the path is the focus not the end.
The final terminus is the direct result of a string of decisions and actions. These decisions and actions are invariably changing the outcome of life, thereby engendered power in them. Decisions are the essence of life. Everything in this world depends on them, and they are constantly change our future. When Adolf Hitler made the decision to terminate the Jewish, he changed the future of everyone else. Had he not made this decision, the world that is known now may not have existed. The answer is this: entirely. Actions are a manifestation of our decisions. They are when we, as individuals, take our thoughts; our beliefs; and our dreams, and put them to a physical use to achieve what we desire. If we could not put our decisions into actions, then the world would stand still. Actions are what drives society and without them there would be absolutely nothing. Personally speaking, my actions have not always been the most forceful. But even still, my actions change my future everyday. If I choose to not do an assignment it could impact my entire future, because I could get behind in classes and not get into college. When I decided to teach myself Russian, I opened up several doors for future job opportunities; therefore changing the course of my future and eventually my end.
