Domestic Violence in Society
“The Day it Happened” by Rosario Morales In the story by Rosario Morales “The Day it Happened”, the main character,
Josie, has been undergoing great abuses from her husband Ramon. After much thought and time spent in physical and emotional pain, Josie chose to leave Ramon and did not fear a reaction from him because she was doing what was best for both her and her future child. She ends up realizing that there are many dangers that she faces if she continues to allow this to happen and live in the same environment with him. The author uses her story to help people see what has been happening in majority of the Hispanic societies and even families throughout the world.
Josie had been trying to justify her husband’s actions with his abuse for too long.
Rosario Morales is able to use a narrative from the perspective of a child who witnesses
Ramon’s abuse of Josie. The child’s narrative describes that the entire community around the family knew about what was happening and sided with Josie on her decision. The neighbors had grown tired of watching the situation and hearing about it.
Part of the theme of the story shows there has been lack of communication between
Josie and Ramon. She had failed to put a stop to the abuse, possibly due to fear of

Border 2 repercussions, but she was finally able to gather her strength to do what it best for her child. The crowd witnesses it all come to a close after seeing Josie all packed up and waiting for Ramon to break the news. The crowd is a perfect example of today’s society and how they are aware of the abuse. They help show the reader that in most real life forms of the story, everyone around is aware of what happens behind closed doors.
They know of Ramon’s mistreatment of his wife but they have not done anything to help. Unknowingly, we interact with victims of abuse every day and either don’t want to get involved or

She does not want to be hidden behind a barrier of illegitimacy and the fact that she does not live with a father. However the use of metaphor in, “she loves us even if it is in a suffocating way, and that makes me feel very guilty,” shows that even early on in the novel Josie still feels the importance of family. When Josie faces the prospect of meeting her father for the first time her fear is evident by the use of metaphor in, “my heart began to pound at one hundred miles an hours,” which also underlines another family complexity that some adolescents may face. The metaphor also emphasises the mixture of apprehension and curiosity that confuses many teenagers. However near the end of the novel, Marchetta’s use of hyperbole in, “I cried because I was loved by two of the strongest women,” highlights the changes that Josie has undergone and her new found positive feelings toward her family. During adolescence you will face many complexities and complications that may arouse within your family but in the end your family bonds will be stronger than…

The emotive word ‘bastard’ got directed towards Josie many times which made her feel alone yet through pathos moments did she realize that being illegitimate was unimportant. “I always hated being illegitimate. I always did until the other day when I realized it was nothing.” Josie yearned to be society’s definition of ‘cool’ and her clouded judgment directed her beliefs of what she wanted into an entirely different direction. “Please God let me be accepted by someone other than the underdog”. She deemed that the hierarchy of events in her life to be ruled by acceptance from others and it became a motif that repeated itself until one day when she understood. Only when she reached her identity did the trivial and material parts of her life vanish and the real ones cemented.…

Maybe having hero in the title is a bit of a stretch and an exaggeration. Have you ever indulged in a book that has your attention every minute of every page you read? I am sure the answer is yes. I think most people have related to this feeling at some point. Dave Dravecky, a book written in 1993, is the book that stole my mind from page one. A book that was so fascinating to me, I used it for my book report in school at least three times. As I reflect back on that, perhaps writing a book report on the same book in three different grades is a bit excessive…or just pathetic. After I finished reading this book the first time (I read it at least two times), I am almost certain that this is all I talked about. My family could attest to this. “Gee whiz Britton, stop with the Dave Dravecky talk”, I can hear them say. School friends so tired of hearing me rave about this book. “You have got to read this book”, I would say. Actually, come to think of it, most everybody around me could quote the book without ever reading it, thanks to my nonstop blabbing about every detail.…

Whatever a "superior" group has will be used to justify its superiority, and whatever and "inferior" group has will be used to justify its plight. Black me were given poorly paid jobs because they were said to be "stronger" than white men, while all women were relegated to poorly paid jobs because they were said to be "weaker." As the little boy said when asked if he wanted to be a lawyer like his mother, "Oh no, that's women's work." Logic has nothing to do with oppression.…
