In my rhetorical analysis I analyzed Banneker’s comparison of pre-revolutionary war to slavery, religious references, and tone. I selected Banneker’s descriptive use of imagery to compare the pre-revolution to slavery, because this comparison struck me as a crucial aspect to his argument. Banneker needed Jefferson, a privileged man who never experienced the life of a slave, to feel a personal connection to the situation. By creating a comparison to something that Jefferson had a crucial role in, Banneker attempts to do just that. I fould this comparison an especially powerful way to start of a letter, because it almost forced Jefferson to continue reading, as it brought his life into the equation. Next, I choose to analyse Banneker’s use of religious references because I felt that these references strengthened Jefferson’s connection with his argument against slavery. I especially focused on the quote from Job because I think it made Banneker’s argument more clear and comparable. Over the years we have come to understand the Great Emancipator’s struggles and his determination to push for a better future for his nation. In the blink of war, Lincoln came to the nation’s rescue. But was Lincoln really the Great Emancipator? Was Lincoln actually opposed to the slavery movement? Or did he not consider the blacks to be an equal race? Did he make an active effort to free the slaves? Or was the emancipation a never Lincoln’s priority? In my opinion, although freeing the slaves was never Lincoln’s top priority during his tenure as president, Lincoln was sympathetic towards them. His main issue was the war and the probability of the union getting split into two. Malcolm Gladwell used a great deal of hand gestures. For the most part I enjoyed them as he transitioned from one thing to the next. This made it more exciting and kept my attention. Abraham Lincoln uses figurative and euphonious diction to encourage reflection on the Civil War to the people of Northern and Southern United States. First, he uses figurative paradox to contradict judging others (the slaves), and expect that "we" (the owners of the slaves) should not be judged. "It may seem strange that any men should dare ask a just God 's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men 's faces, but let us judge not, that we not be judged." This paradoxical statement addresses God as a medium that will assist the country with slavery from the "sweat of other men 's faces" (the slaves), yet the owners expect not to be judged when they do much to be judged; this will give insight to the people to reconciliate their actions. Also, euphonious diction is used through the term of rhyme; in which Lincoln expresses the hopes for "us" (the North and South) to end the Civil War effects without trying to doing anything to end this cause. The “Gettysburg Address” was presented by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War in 1863. The “I Have a Dream” speech was presented during the March on Washington during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963. These speeches, even one-hundred years difference in time when given, they both address a common theme for freedom and equality. The “Gettysburg Address” purpose was to urge and give hope to his audience to continue to fight for the Union so America would not perish and the “I Have a Dream” purpose of demanding an urgent change for equality for all.
