An Analysis Of Max's Book Thief
“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean, if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty” - Mahatma Gandhi. Markus zusak captured the same idea in the Book Thief. This book takes place during world war 2 / the holocaust. It’s about a girl who loses her loved ones in a bombing. Throughout this essay there will be 3 main points, Max’s book, Liesel’s friendship with Rudy, and Ilsa’s understanding of Liesel. The world may be horrifying to look at, but if you look real hard you will find a little grace and beauty in the world.
Max’s book is all about finding a little beauty throughout his deep and dark past. During Max’s book he wrote “when I was hiding, I dreamed of a certain man. The hardest was

Death is our guide and narrator to 'The Book Thief,' by Markus Zuzak. In some ways Death seems human as we see that he experiences both sadness and joy in the novel and even gets depressed. To help distract him from his sad, never-ending work, he often fixates on the colour of the sky as a distraction from the anguished survivors of the dead. Death faces suffering with dignity. He does not enjoy his never-ending job of collecting souls but he keeps persevering as he knows he must continue for the sake of the living. Like many humans, Death tries to find ways to give meaning to his…

Although most assume Death looks like the Grim Reaper or a scary skeleton thing, in The Book Thief, Death is not. In fact, he even tells us what he looks like when he says, “I do not carry a sickle or a scythe. I only wear a hooded black robe when it’s cold. And I don’t have those skull-like facial features you seem to enjoy pinning on me from a distance… Find yourself a mirror while I continue” (Zusak 307). Essentially Death is saying that because all humans die, we all resemble death. Humans can and will die, and thus he is one of the things that is constant between all humans. Due to this reason I drew a man looking into a mirror to show Death. I just…

In correspondence, Max had the notion that “Living was living. The price was guilt and shame.” (pg.208, Zusak), signifying his belief that by abandoning his family, he was indeed alive, but only at the sacrifice of the ones he cared about. Max is haunted by the fact that, “when he was pushed out by the rest of the family, the relief struggled inside of him like an obscenity. It was something he didn’t want to feel, but nonetheless, he felt it with such gusto it made him want to throw up” (pg. 193, Zusak). So he carries his burden, his shame, along with him.…

In times of war things can get ugly fast. War wounds, it scars, it kills, it devastates, and it hurts. The Book Thief written by: Markus Zusak is not just a book about those things, but rather a book about a girl named Liesel Meminger, and her life during WWII. But in Liesel's life, Markus Zusak shows us something else but all the ugliness in WWII, instead he shows us the beauty in times of ugliness in Liesel's life. Some examples of this are, when Hans reads to Liesel after she has nightmares, Liesel reading (using the power of words to calm people down in the bomb shelter, when bombs are dropping, and Liesel reading Mein Kampf with Max in the basement.…

The Book Thief is an encouraging tale of a fictional girl named Liesel. Liesel was raised during a time of great pain and suffering: Nazi Germany. Many Jews, Gypsies, mentally and physically disabled, and others were killed over a ten year timespan. Scope magazine adapted the book and the movie to create a play. One of the characters, named Death, states, “I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.” True, we’re all human beings but how we picture the world and react to it is a whole different story. The extent of examples that can be found in the novel, movie, play, and even real life Nazi Germany has a very wide range including the mass murders and the “Harriet Tubman”s.…

Red. Book. Family. Coward. Jew. Death. One may say that they are just words, but is that really all they are? Throughout The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, words bring joy and comfort as well as rage and heartbreak. The power of words…it is shown in this book, it shows how people are destroyed and how people are saved from words. It was about Hitler using his power of words to rule, and soon, his words turned into trees, but Max and Liesel’s bond grew further than any of Hitler’s word trees did. Max was able to evoke emotions of love and friendship out of Liesel, even if it was through a book. Max and Liesel’s story is just one example, but books, poems, the internet, music, and much more can be used to spread the power of words as well. When people have favorite songs or poems, it is usually of the words that evoke certain emotions out the reader. They are able to relate to what the author is talking about, thus resonating with them.…

The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, has caused me to have multiple reactions, to the story, characters, and themes. They have made me feel mad, sad, upset, happy, but most of all surprised; throughout the recent readings every night more gets added to the story and more just surprises me. What completely shocked/surprised me was when Liesel fought back against Ludwig Schmeikl and what followed afterwards. However, there has been far more things than just that, that have surprised me. A couple include Liesel receiving two books for christmas, Hans Junior leaving, and how Rudy has reacted to Liesel throughout the entire passage,…

This passage reminds me of the scene where Napoleon steals the milk and apples from the animals without asking in Animal Farm. Similarly, in The Book Thief, Rudy and Liesel are also stealing vegetables from many farms. However, the reason that Napoleon steals the milk and apples is because of his greed, while Rudy and Liesel are stealing to "extend their thieving repertoire" (Zusak 161). Also, from my interpretation of this passage, I feel that the law enforcements are not strong enough to stop thievery at that time in Germany because, if the law enforcements were powerful, then Rudy and Liesel wouldn't take the risk to extend their thieving…
