“I bet there were a lot of people mad at Shakespeare, too, but aren 't we all glad that he wrote Hamlet?" Yolanda 's sisters said in trying to make their tight situation with their little sister Yolanda just a little bit lighter. Even during the days the Garcia family had resided in the Dominican Republic, and Yolanda had always had a cause to tell her stories in either fact or fiction form. The family had to be cautious in the dictatorship, which in turn, had caused many sleepless nights in the Garcia household. When the family had immigrated to the United States her mother still had to worry about the stories that Yolanda would go on to write. Would she have to wait around for a social worker to stop by the house if Yo were telling her fiction stories at school? Yolanda had to write her stories about the…
What’s So Amazing about Grace? is a book written by Philip Yancey. It begins with a twisted story of a prostitute living on the streets. She is unable to feed her two-year old child and has to find another way to earn money. She could not think of any other alternatives and began selling her child out for prostitution. She could make much more money this way than she could in one night. The woman began counseling and when asked if she had ever considered going to church, her response was that attending church would only make her feel worse about herself.…
My weekly wonder is about the actress and environmentalist Shailene Woodley. Earlier in October, Woodley was arrested for trespassing and protesting against a planned oil pipeline. Because of this and her passion for the environment, Woodley was honored by the Environmental Media Association. Woodley gave a speech that persuades people to “Live a more compassionate life, because the ripple effect of that is what is going to save our oceans, our planet, and our race.” After the speech, Nikki Reed stated, “I love what she stands for. I hope she brings some much needed attention to what is going on right now.”…
During the text ‘Year of Wonders’ knowledge, isolation and ignorance is a major factor, highlighted throughout the understanding of many different characters. Most of these factors are a result of the important and life-taken religion, which cause characters for example, Sam and his deserted and lonely life in the mineshaft where he worked and died, ‘Sam’s world was a dark, damp maze of rakes and scrins thirty feet under the ground… His whole life was confined by these things.’. People are limited to what they want to discover as the plague and their religion prohibit them from being rebellious. ‘Like most in this village, I had no occasion to travel father than the market town seven miles distant.’ Anna Frith notifies the reader how no one…

Children in August’s grade treated him as an outsider at the beginning of “Wonder”. Many claimed he had the “plague” and wouldn’t dare to make any physical contact with August, as shown on page 120; “Anyone who accidentally touches August has only thirty seconds to wash their hands or find hand sanitizer before they catch the Plague.” However, this does not consider that the attitudes towards Auggie reversed by the end of “Wonder”. To prove this, evidence is given on page 308; “In fact, and I don’t mean to brag here, but it kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me.” Despite people being fearful of even touching Auggie at the beginning of the year, people became more comfortable with him and even chose to come and get close to him for the group picture.…
In Wonder by R.J Palacio we follow the journey of August Pullman who has a very rare genetic deformity. In this essay I discussed the point of view of Jack, Summer and Via. These characters are all very nice to August. The message that the author is trying to get across in this book is that it’s about what people are like on the inside not the outside and you should accept it if people are physically different to…
In the novel, Year of Wonders written by Geraldine Brooks, she explores how such horrible tragedies can bring out the worst in human nature. The plague was a major disaster that can affect many people in different ways. Brooks expresses these misfortunes through certain characters such as Aphra Bont as she was a selfish, uncaring character who manipulated the people of Eyam, Colonel Bradford as he was a heartless coward who only thought of himself and Josiah because of his poor decision making and attitude that was presented in the text. However, the calamity of the Plague did not always bring out the inferior in all the characters. Elinor Mompellion had a good outcome with it as even though death was surrounding her, she still went out into the village and helped and cared for many people as best as could. Overall these characters were affected by the tragedy of the plague that resulted in many characters unravelling to becoming spiteful and silicule.…

“Coming up to the apartment house along the parkway, I raised my eyes and looked through the snow at our living-room window. I saw my mother framed in the window, staring down at me. She met me at the door. ‘Where were you?’… ‘Your father is in Detroit, and you come home almost an hour late. What do you want from me? What are you doing to me, Asher?’” (83).…
Throughout the plague year many of the villagers were affected by the tragic hit of the plague. One of the main themes in the novel ‘’fear’’ is something that highly affects the actions and and can completely change their values and morals. Fear which comes complimentary with the plague and can bring out the best and the worst in the villagers. Times of crisis can bring out a monster in all of us, but can a just like jon said “these times they do make monsters of us all”lso but times like this can also bring out the good.…

Her mission is to bring love, peace, and sexual equality to a world torn by the hatred of men. The heroine Princess Diana of Themyscira, more famously known as Wonder Woman, has gone through various reimagining and different retellings in both media and comic books. But all of these have the same basic origin. She was born and lived the majority of her life on the isolated paradise island of Themyscira, an island inhabited entirely of Amazonian women. Everything changed one day when pilot, Captain Steve Trevor crashed on the mysterious island. Soon after he crashed, as he was being held and treated on the island, Queen Hippilyta held a tournament to decide who would have the honor of escorting Captain Trevor back to the United States. Against her mother’s wishes, Princess Diana participated in said tournament and won. At this point the narrative diverges depending on its retelling. In the 1975 pilot, set in World War II, named, The New Original Wonder Woman directed by Leonard Horn, Wonder Woman fights Nazis during the World War II era soon after leaving the island. In the 2009 animated movie, Wonder Woman, directed by Lauren Montgomery, Wonder Woman fights to stop the reign of the Greek god of war, Ares and his army of undead Amazons. Wonder Woman has always been widely considered as a feminist icon, thus these movies are supposed to reflect such a message. Thus each movie shows how the times and sexual equality has changed over the years. These can be shown by the relationship between Princess Diana and Steve Trevor in which one movie portrays them fighting on equal footing against a common threat much like co-workers and the other not so much which is apparent in a multitude of fighting scenes; Wonder Woman’s behavior and personality through both movies but mostly with her passive behavior in one fight scene in the 1975 pilot and her aggressive behavior in the 2009 animated movie; and Steve Trevor’s difference in behavior and personality but…
