You earn recognition, all your playing time, and a starting position through hard work. I grew up playing all kinds of different sports. I played baseball, football and later in life I started to swim competitively. In each case, I had to learn to take the responsibility to do my part—for myself and for my teammates. Practice was mandatory and took priority over other interests of mine. This was hard for me, since I missed out on school dances, family activities and other fun events because I had to be at practice everyday. It also forced me to learn good time management skills as I started to balance school, a social life, daily two-hour practices and games on the weekends. The coaches can only teach so much and, while they tried, couldn’t force me to learn my plays or study in my off time. I knew my hard work was paying off when my coach would say, “Good job Gunnar, I’m proud of you!” That one sentence made me realize that my hard work had paid off and that I should continue to work even harder, not only in sports but also in everything I…
Contrary to what all the opponents believe, being an athlete is a full-time job. On a typical day, a player will wake up before classes, get a lift or conditioning session in, go to class until 3 or 4 p.m., go to practice, go to mandatory study hall, and then finish homework or study for a test.…
Dr. Strangelove and Cat’s Cradle both have similarities in their story line. They were written in the 1960’s by different authors, (Dr. Strangelove is a movie not a novel) and both mentioned and dealt with Communists, and involved scientists. Although they have their similarities, the common topics are of weapons of mass destruction, power, and a dark comedy.…

A factor the athlete should consider is the new form of carb-loading however this should only be used if the athlete is participating in a endurance event, if the athlete is a power athlete they may use creatine supplements to increase their PC stores as they will be using the ATP-PC system during their event. Another factor the athlete should consider in their diet is hydration, the athlete should take isotonic fluid before and during the event/ training and take hypertonic fluids after the event/training this is so that the athlete is able to replenish ions such as Ca+ and Na+ lost thorough sweat.…

College athletes have a very busy schedule when they finished classes and practice, they have very little free time. During those free time, they sleep or do schoolwork. Student athletes are required to take a minimum of twelve credit hours each semester and they have to pass at least nine credit hours. With these rules, the athletes are spending many of hours of studying or going to class. After studying and going to their classes, they have to go to practice. Going to practice takes up about four to seven hours a day. After a long day, the athletes only have a few couple of hours for them to have some down time like watching Netflix or sleeping. These athletes are also college students who are not getting paid for their commitments. They have to find time to put work in. When athletes are looking for a job, they are very limited to only have a couple of hours a day to work. A large number of jobs want their employees to be available to work on the weekends, this tough for an athlete to look for a job because they are never available on weekends because they are traveling with the team to…
Have you ever been invited to go somewhere but you had to say no because of a sport or club? That’s commitment. You committed to be at those practices/ meetings. Professional athletes have huge commitments to their team. They have to deal with games, talk shows, interviews, etc. Some even have to be away from close family for weeks at a time. According to Factmonster.com, players put in 40 hours a week on average. Sunrise to sunset they are training to be the best of the best. Most professional…

Nutrition is paramount to athletic success. Nutrition provides the energy for sporting events, the nutrients for muscle growth, and overall performance. Nutrition allows for optimal body fat for our sport as well. Let's start with the guidelines: The Macronutrients Protein: This is the main macronutrient athletes should be concerned with. Protein helps build muscle, and help protein synthesis. This is prevalent in meats and dairy products. Carbohydrate: This is a main energy source for the body. No, carbohydrates are not diabolically evil. Carbohydrates can be good, if you eat the right types. A type of carbohydrate that athletes need to be aware of is fiber. Fiber helps with digestion, and keeps you "regular", if you catch my drift. Carbohydrates are prevalent in grains. Fats: Gasp! The dreaded fats! Actually, fats can be extremely helpful in nutritional plans. I am talking about certain oils that have preferable benefits to other junk fats, usually found in fried food. I will elaborate on this later on in the article. Fats are prevalent in oils, dairy products, and…
College athletes work hard for the sport they play. They go to practices, games, scrimmages, and probably play in their free-time to improve themselves. The practices for most are pretty long and take a lot out of a person. An average game is anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half, and that is a long time to be running around constantly with minimal breaks. Scrimmages are just extra games for the athletes to improve against other players.…
they spend most of their free time being trained and training themselves to be better sports individuals. They end up spending less time with their families and friends with an excuse of training. This sacrifice sometimes goes to an extent of making them to miss out or rather forget important dates concerning their families and friends. When important games clash with important family or friends’ occasion, they are most likely going to end up choosing the game over their families and friends. This is because they are usually loyal to their team and would do anything to participate in the games.…
Opposite of what everyone else thinks, being a college athlete is a full time job. On a typical day they wake up a little earlier than what they have to, to maybe get a morning practice or conditioning session before classes. After school they go to afternoon practices that could last hours, go to mandatory study hall and then get home to finish any homework that they have and/or study for a test.…
