Analyzing Gender Roles in “Anchorman''
“ Gender is society's idea of what it means to be male or female, of the appropriate roles for each sex to play. Society transforms biological sexuality, when a person is genetically declared as a male or a female, into beings of human activity.” In this essay, I would like to analyze gender roles using the example of the main characters from the comedy movie, “Anchorman”(2004). I would like to look into female and male characters individually and compare the similarities and contrast the differences between them. Veronica Coringstone (Christina Applegate) is a charming blonde female who plays the main role in , “Anchorman”. She is an intellectual and professional woman with many ambitions. It’s the 70’s, and it’s a time, when men, “ruled the world”. In spite of this, she has a goal to be the first female anchor on network television. In this film, she fights for equality of the genders and breaks the stereotype of the woman as housewife. She is also very attractive. Men look at her as if she is a sexual object and not a serious journalist. She wants to prove them her professionalism to them. However, she just like many other women, is very sensitive and tends to fall in love. Veronica falls in love with her partner at work. He is one of these guys who she is fighting about her rights with. His name is Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell). He is a successful anchorman on San Diego's newscaster. Ron is very selfish, bumptious, and sexist. He can't accept the idea of working with a woman in the same position, and especially, when that woman could do better than him. The character says: '' Veronica is dying to quit a job, so she could take care of me and have babies ''. That's how he wants to see women's self-realization in life. He represents the typical man at that
