It affects how the child processes and interprets words. For younger children, it affects their communication and language. This is because they mispronounce words, especially words that sound very similar, causing their sentences to not make much sense. For children at school, it also affects their communication and language as they have difficulty explaining thoughts and ideas and they process these things very slowly. They also get confused by figurative language and complex sentence structure. This also means they find it very hard to understand jokes. They find it very difficult to stay focused and/or remember things and can find it hard to focus when there is background noise. They may also say “what” a lot even if they have heard what is said. Dyscalculia is another specific learning difficulty that affects a child’s learning and development, mainly affecting their ability to do mathematics. Dyscalculia affects the child’s ability to show understanding of place value, quantity, positive and negative value and carrying and borrowing. They can also show difficulty in fractions and money and can’t understand equations where there is multiple steps or patterns, which are all things that they learn to do at …show more content…
Words and sentences may be written down, but unfinished or containing omitted letters/words. So “the cat sat on the mat” may become “cat sat on mat”. Copying or writing may also be slow and laboured. Any work that a child with dysgraphia submits may not be able to be read and it may take them longer than usual to do work, causing them to fall behind in lessons and/or exams. This also affects their fine motor skills and causes them to exhibit strange wrist or body positions when writing. This unusual grip may then cause them to complain of cramp in their hand or other pains in their hand. Dyslexia is a very common learning difficulty, which can affect their communication and language, their Literacy or both. It can also sometimes affect their mathematics. They may read slowly and may show difficulty recalling known words. They may also have trouble with correctly ordering letters and with spelling in general. Mathematical equations may also cause them trouble. Language Processing Disorders affects expressive and receptive language (sometimes only affecting one of them). They may have difficulty understanding and gaining meaning from spoken language and may find it difficult to express themselves
