Remorseful dreams: Regret in Kansas
“Kansas” is the story of an old man reflecting back on a life changing event. As a boy, the old man was faced with a difficult decision. He didn’t know who to help and if he'd be hurt himself if he did interfere. In this story Stephen Dobyns suggests that if people don’t stop wickedness when they have the chance, they may regret it for the rest of their life. He shows us how smart young man with potential life changed because of one event.
The old man, at the time, was a college-aged boy. Very fearful and not knowing what to tell the upset farmer he asks “What about the police”. He was a smart young man, in that he chose his words with the farmer wisely. It says, “And the boy wanted to say he would forgive the wickedness, but he was afraid of that answer as well,” letting us know that he wasn’t just talking out of fear, but making sure what he told and asked the farmer was not going to upset him.
The story tells us that he is the only of his brothers to go off to college, that he attended university of Oklahoma , and that he is about to spend his summer in summer school at Lawrence to let us know he is intelligent and that he plans to play in Carnegie Hall someday may actually happen. It says, “He was hitchhiking back to summer school from Oklahoma” indicating his love and dedication for his education.
The old man's dreams indicate that that event stayed on his mind until the day he died and and filled him with regret. Also readers know that that one event impacted the old mans life enough for him to tell his kids about it, “He told his sons the story about the farmer in the pickup”. Not knowing if anyone was killed drove him crazy. He thought about how he didn’t interfere and what would have happened if he did. He regreted not doing anything to help even though he still didn’t know how it would have effected the whole situation. His dreams were a way for his mind to have a break and not think about what happened with the farmer, his wife, and the man driving the plymouth. Until the day he died he didn’t know what the best way was for him to help, but he wished he would have.
Guilt weighed the old man down his whole life. Dobyns never names the oldman so the reader can beter put themselves in his shoes. The readers can analyze the situation to know what they would have dont and how they would have felt. This story shows how guilt can make people regret something for the rest of their life even because of one crazy event.

The townspeople’s reaction to the news of the killings is one of “amazement, shading into dismay; a shallow horror sensation that cold springs of personal fear swiftly deepened” (70). The Clutters’ demise has larger significance for this sheltered little part of western Kansas: it amounts to the infiltration of an “other” – a “poor, rootless, misbegotten” other – into their peaceable and prosperous little universe. The Clutter killings symbolize a collision of the two sides of America: the prosperous, self-assured “haves” with the disappointed and destitute “have-nots.” The ideology of the American dream is forced to confront those it has left behind. The town of Holcomb, following the initial trauma of the grim discovery, begins to confront the longer-term implications of the murders: “This hitherto peaceful congregation of neighbors and old friends had suddenly to endure the unique experience of distrusting each other” (88). That the town of Holcomb has experienced a loss of innocence is a point that Capote continues to explore in this section. Disillusioned by the crime, the residents are fraught with feelings of fear and mistrust, and many set off to settle elsewhere, hoping to regain their sense of security and well-being.…

Wooow! Three weeks went by so fast and I haven’t even noticed it. Ooh well chapter 10 was the best out of all the ones I read so far. I feel like this chapter will bring the most use to me and my sex life. I often wondered if Earth would be as populated if sex wasn’t pleasurable. Or what would happen if condoms didn’t exist or if condoms came around 50 years later or 50 years earlier. I just have so many questions and I would love to know the answers. Honestly reading the book makes me want to know what sex feels like and if I am missing out on anything. The book makes it seem good and fun, and now I feel weird. Moving on, oral sex just creeps me out. Why would you put something that gross in to your mouth. Guys pee out of their dick and girls have periods and pee and all the nasty stuff comes out of the place people put their mouth on. C’mon really? That place is like super dirty. I mean I know we take showers but still I can’t even imagine myself giving a guy a blow job. I don’t even think I will let a guy go down on me. Another thing that scares me is anal intercourse. I mean that just sounds painful but I can’t really judge without trying it either and the world is just a weird place. But what I never understood was why guys like boobs and butts? They are just rolls of fat hanging down. Why don’t guys like belly fat hanging down low? Probably for the same reason girls like abs and nice butts on nice guys rather than fat. But why? Why are abs more attractive than fat, what is it in us that we like one over the other. Why don’t we like fat and find abs weird. Got some weird questions going on over here.…

There was a lot of fear brought to the old man when he thought someone was in the house and had been stalking him. This is stated in the fifth paragraph, it says, “ Although I chuckled at heart. I knew that he had been lying awake ever since the first slight noise His fears had been ever since growing upon him. He had been trying to fancy them causeless, but he had been saying It is nothing but the wind in the chimney.” Based off of this quote, this shows how there is a sense of fear and panic in the old man which, brought that horror characteristics into the story. Then, there was also fear of insane that was brought towards the end of the story. It says, “Yet the sound increased and they heard! They suspected! They knew! Villains! I shrieked dissemble no more!
