Analysis And Conclusion For Cellular Respiration Lab
Analysis: In this lab we measured the rate of respiration of germinating mung beans and germinating peas at room temperature and 10 degrees Celsius. The rates of respiration at room temperature were higher than the rates of respiration in cold water. The reaction rate of the germinating peas at room temperature was .0125 ml/min and the reaction rate of the peas at 10 degrees Celsius was .0095 ml/min. The same is true for the germinating mung beans. At room temperature the rate of reaction was .0105 ml/min and at 10 degrees Celsius the rate was .0033ml/min. In the graphs the amount of oxygen consumed increased at a constant rate for room temperature. For cold water the graph started out increasing and then after 10 minutes both the mung beans and the peas either leveled out or decreased. The amount of oxygen consumed at 15 and 20 minutes was .19 ml for the peas. The amount of oxygen consumed by the mung beans at 15 minutes decreased from .095ml to .075ml and at 20 minutes it decreased to .065 ml. The germinating peas increased at a higher rate than the mung beans, but the rates of respiration were similar because the difference between the rates was .002 ml/min at room temperature. At 10 degrees the rate of respiration for the germinating peas was .0062 ml/min higher than the rate of respiration for the germinating mung beans. Our data was similar to other group’s data at room temperature because they all showed similar trends so any group’s data will reflect the same trends shown by other group’s data so that is why I used our data. For the cold temperature data I used group 8 data because it showed consistency in the rates of respiration for the germinating mung beans and peas. For example in group 2’s data the rate of respiration is positive for the peas and negative for the mung beans and vice versa for group 6. Group 4 had no rate of respiration for the peas but a high rate of respiration for the mung beans. Only group 8 showed the same trends for both the

    Enzymes are biological catalysts. They work by lowering the activation energy needed to initiate a chemical reaction. Enzymes work within an optimal temperature and optimal pH. Enzymes are highly specific for a single substrate. The Enzyme is usually much larger in size than the substrate it binds to. In some cases, an enzyme requires something called a cofactor to begin the chemical reaction. There were four different experiments that were executed in the enzyme lab. Experiment 7.1, the first experiment, was performed to test the effect of temperature on enzymatic activity. Based on what I know about the effect of temperature on the enzymatic activity of lactase, if the lactase used in today’s lab was extracted from human cells, I hypothesize that the optimal temperature for lactase to be in is around 37 degrees Celsius, which is the average human body temperature. The second experiment performed, experiment 7.2, tested the effect of pH on enzymatic activity. Based on what I know about the effect of pH on the enzymatic activity of lactase, if the lactase used in today’s lab was extracted from human cells, I hypothesize that the optimal pH level is 7, which is the average pH level in humans. Experiment 7.3 tests enzymatic specificity. Knowing that lactase is specific for the substrate lactose, lactase will only bind to lactose and not work with the other substrate used in this experiment, maltose. The last experiment of the lab, 7.4, was done to determine the cofactors of the enzyme, lactase. I hypothesize that EDTA, a cofactor inhibitor, will have a negative effect on the reaction and lower the amount of glucose that could possibly be produced if EDTA was not present.…

    The objective of this lab was to figure out which has a higher cell respiration rate between crayfish and elodea. In order to figure this out we first set up three beakers to represent our control, elodea and crayfish and filled them with 75mL of culture solution which were dechlorinated making the solution acidic.
