Good morning to Mr Philip and my friends. On this glorious morning, I would like to take this opportunity to share a movie entitled 12 Years a Slave.
It was a dreadful incident that based on real story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who lived in Saratoga Springs (Coyne, J., 2014). He suffered 12 years for being a slave and treated cruelly by the slave handlers as a result of abducted by few white men and forced into slavery (Yareah Magazine, 2014). Though he was afraid of being enslaved, he stayed calm in any circumstances. He knew he might get into trouble if he disobeyed or fight for freedom. He was keen to fight for freedom as he was born as a freeman. An important theme I have learnt in this film is be resourceful, he had the ability to make prompt decisions and ideas to overcome his difficulties. Example, at the beginning of the movie, it showed that Solomon Northup used the juice of berries to make ink for him to write. He sharpened the tip of the bamboo and it became convenient for him to write. He even took spare piece of paper each time he was assigned to run an errand. He then crafted into a letter and attempted to write to his pals in Saratoga Springs, New York. As a slave who had been enslaved for many years, he attempted to escape from slavery. One day, he was asked to run an errand to the store. At that moment, he thought of an idea to escape from slavery, he attempted to run away but failed. He saw a few white men were lynching their slaves who wanted to escape from slavery. Another good example that showed Solomon Northup act accordingly to the situation was he asked help from one of the hired hands, Bass to write letter to his friends in Saratoga. In this movie, Solomon Northup trusted someone who he had just knew for less than twenty-four hours and ended up sold into slavery. A man can be deceitful, it is always up to us to see the situation. As much as being cheated by the two white men named Mr Brown and Mr Hamilton, he also got cheated by a slave who originally promised him to send letter to one of his friends in Saratoga to seek help. The slave broke his promise and betrayed Solomon Northup. Due to lack of evidence, Solomon Northup was saved. Besides that, Solomon Northup also made an impulsive decision as he fought with Tibeats, a slave handler. His rebellious act caused him to be lynched by a few men, but ended up rescued by Chapin and
