Poverty, the lack of life’s necessary needs is not something an individual hopes to strive in life. In the book, poverty is the driving force for the individuals living in Annawadi to have tension between them. Asha, a kind mother
of Manju works had to try to become the “slum lord” in Annawadi but became caught up in the power that came with it. While she had the disadvantage of being a woman, which shows the sexism in not only Annawadi but in the whole world, she also had to deal with the corruption of politics. The narrator stated, “As every slumdweller knew, there were three main ways out of poverty: finding an entrepreneurial niche, as the Husains had found in garbage; politics and corruption, in which Asha placed her hopes; and education.” Many people had great dream they wished to reach from the slum, but Asha had a reasonable dream to pursue which was to become the “slum lord”. Asha worked hard to send her daughter, Manju to college but did hurt a lot of people on the way of hoping to be the next “slum lord”.
Abdul works around the clock and dodges bullies to collect as much garbage he can get to earn enough money to survive. Many people living in Annawadi are garbage pickers, who will recycle the garbage and sell as their job. Many individuals hope to work in the western society, especially with a hotel close by. However, Annawadi does not want to cheap his way to the top but wants to earn money and work his way out of poverty. Abdul will climb over fences, make dangerous reaches, and run his way over to a piece of garbage if he knows it will earn him some money. The narrator states, “Like most people in the slum, and in the world, for that matter, he believed his own dreams properly aligned to his capacities.” Abdul only hoped to marry a good wife who would be kind and support him. Abdul would like to eventually rise above poverty but he knows that he can only work now and hope later.
Poverty, may be the difference between having electricity and not; but having hope in life is something that everyone can have. Katherine Boo, tells us from her writing that the many individuals living in Annawadi, have to go through great conflict in order to strive for their dream. Sex, caste, and religion or only a few words that greatly separate individuals even if it is in a slum or in an upper class party. The stories of each person in the book, Boo explains the difficulties that come with having hope, which included corruption in politics and accusation.
