Country of the Bad Wolfes, a novel by James Carlos Blake, makes the important point that in order to build a dynasty you must be willing to take risks and partner with other people, otherwise you won't succeed. Blake's writing style is very engaging and because I've only come to the United States 4 years ago there are many new things I've discovered, and continue to discover, about this nation and its history. I didn't know that as a result of the Mexican American war that the United States took over 1/2 of Mexico's territory, but what was even more amazing was how uncivilized it all seemed even in the late 1800's. Reading this novel piqued my interest in the subject of mid 19th to early 20th century history in the United States and I'd highly recommend this book for those who are looking for a fun way to learn about history.
I felt more connected to John Roger than Samuel Thomas because Samuel Thomas just seemed to be too dangerous and straight away at the beginning of the book he ends up killing a night watchman and then later joins the military and that just seemed too impulsive and I thought he was an idiot for doing that. I don't really understand why he didn't contact his brother right away instead of running off to the military and I lost respect for him early on in the story because in my family we were taught to work hard and wisely. It was easy to see that Roger was going to be very successful because he sought the advice of others and he was willing to work hard as well. Even in 2012 it seems that unless you're partnering up with other people your chances of being very successful are slim.
Something really surprised me though, the more I got to know Samuel Thomas the more I began to like and respect him, even when he chose not to contact his brother during all those years he was separated from him, that's just something we don't do in my culture. When I read about some of the things the military did to
