1984 has a more complete level of control when compared with V for Vendetta. The party in 1984 has almost complete control of its people ‘nothing was your own except the few cubic centimetres inside your skull’ which the party maintains their control and power by fabricating the past and controlling people’s thoughts. For example in 1984, people are watched from telescreens, and monitored for ‘though crime.’ While in ‘V for Vendetta’ information is fabricated by the government but not to a great extent, because people are in charge of their own thoughts and actions. In order to get most Americans to think a certain way after a drastic event like 9/11, the media spreads propaganda, information that is biased or misleading used to promote or publicize a particular cause or point of view. After the shocking event of September 11, propaganda was used to promote the concept of all Muslims being terrorists and violent. 29% of Americans believe that law enforcement agents should go undercover to keep tabs on Muslim activities and fund raising by joining their civic and volunteer organizations (“Statistics”). The idea of Muslims being terrorists fuels the belief that the government has the right to watch them in order to discovers who is a terrorist and who isn’t. This theory is promoted by the news media because Americans have the easiest access to news outlets and in order to gain more views, which would lead to more profit, the news…

The movie "Twelve Angry Men" by Reginald Rose is a drama that displays twelve jurors' in-depth reasoning to decide a unanimous decision on the defendant's sentence. Now let me refocus on the theme at hand: control. The Norsefire party in V for Vendetta rises to power by offering the solution after a string of biological attacks on various establishments: a school, water plant and an underground train station. The fear inspired by these attacks was what made people give them the power to rule. The Wachowski’s have compared and likened the Norsefire party to the Nazi’s the world’s most famous fascist regime. The symbol of the Norsefire uses the same colours and a similar symbol to that of the traditional swastika. The Norsefire also had a similar rise to power as the Hitler regime. First Chancellor Sattler was seen as the saviour before revealing his true colours as a villain “fear became the tool of this government”. The Norsefire also engaged in genocide of homosexuals, Muslims, and ethnics. Rather than concentration camps those captured were…

Conspiracy theories are a very popular part of today’s social structure. They allow room for a person’s imagination and creativity to blossom, as well as satisfying an individual’s basic need for control. A conspiracy theory is defined as an explanatory proposition that accuses a group, organization or singular person of covering up an event or phenomenon which has had great political, social or economic impact. They use the person’s psychological need for control and order and create a truth using many logical fallacies like the bandwagon effect and shotgun argumentation. However, conspiracy theories can also create conflict and uncertainty between the authorities and the public. One of the most famous conspiracies of the last century surrounds the death of film star Marilyn Monroe on August 4th 1962. Like other conspiracy theories such as the murder of John F Kennedy or the 9/11 terrorist attack the death of Munroe reshaped our society by not only questioning the official version of events but by asking deeper questions of societies values. Munroe like all conspiracy theories has a common goal: to spark a potential believer’s imagination through patternicity, logical fallacies and pure curiosity of the unknown. When news erupted of Marilyn Monroe’s death the media claimed it was suicide. However, many conspiracy theorists and a large proportion of the general public at the time and indeed to this day believe she was murdered. With eyewitness accounts, suspicious tapes and an autopsy report, it will become evident that far from being a conspiracy, it will be shown that Marilyn Monroe’s death was in fact murder.…

Those suspected of being spies or opposers of war during the French revolution were quickly tried and unjustly executed. Steven Otfinoski remarks in Triumph and Terror: The French Revolution “A careless word of criticism spoken against the government could put one in prison or worse.”(Doc E). Such executions were both morally unjust and a waste of human manpower during a time of war. Instead of causing people to follow the law, the reign of terror instigated several rebellions in France. (doc A). A letter from the National Convention in France remarks “We had reason to hope that these gatherings would cease as soon as the public troops arrived. Our hopes were misguided and this causes us the greatest of worries.” (doc. D). Had authorities established a sense of nationalist pride in French citizens, war would have been fought vigorously, there would be fewer rebellions, and thus, less loss of human life.…

Society tries to diminish situations that involve someone killing themselves or attempting murder to one person for no reason. But, when a situation arises like above, society makes sure that the world will know about an accomplishment concerning his/her act. Anymore, a person will try to give themselves a name and try to “fit” in for personal reasons. Therefore, some will try performing evil acts to justify themselves.…

A conspiracy theory takes flight when all of these are concocted into a heady mix of conviction. It’s called “conspiratorial cognition,” and it’s the fuel driving belief in Bigfoot, Area 51’s UFOs and the paranormal. But research has been thin on precisely why some have a conspiratorial dispensation. Back in 2007, Patrick Leman wrote in the…
