The role of Eva Peron is played by Madonna and is portrayed as a sultry, sex symbol. Antonio Banderas, was brilliant as Che, who narrates the film. His portrayal brings humor and depth of character to the role. Jonathan Pryce, as Juan Peron, was an empathic dictator who portrayed a quiet, reserved, almost father like figure. His performance, although more subdued than his female counterpart, played an equally exceptional role in the film. Evita is the story of a young girl named Eva Duarte, who was the illegitimate daughter of a farmer and a seamstress, who was considered lower class and not worthy of attending her own father’s funeral. She was from the back streets of Argentina, and using her feminine ways and charm, she fights her way out of the poverty and desperation she has grown up in and builds herself stardom as an actress and fashionista. She uses men as a part of her plan to rise to the top. Eva leaves her home and travels to Buenos Aires with a singer with whom she has an affair. Eva continues to use men, throwing them aside as she rises toward the top. When she reaches popularity amidst her fellow actors and actresses, she meets Juan Peron, leader of Argentina and soon becomes his wife. Finally, she has everything she wants. Her ultimate goal is to be accepted by the upper class. When looking at the film from a critical analysis point of view, it is evident that the central conflict of the story is that of Eva’s life and career.
