Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s tragedy Faust is known all over the world for its mysterious and interlocking plot. The play comes from legends that had been rumored around in Germany and overall in Europe and it has since become a key text for many other plays and books. There are many interpretations of different parts of the tragedy and it can be interpretated in various ways. I decided to take a closer look at the relationship between two of the main characters - Faust and Margarethe and describe my point of the view of their love. I am going to analyse the tragedy in chronological order and try to understand the feelings and turning points of Faust’s and Margarethe’s relationship. The first description of Margarethe is given to us through the eyes of Faust who is fascinated by her beauty. This happens in the scene A street, shortly after Faust and Mephistos visit to the witches kitchen. Faust is attached to Margarethe at the first sight. It was a bit unexpected that he felt the attraction so early, right after steping outside on the street. It seemed to me that he was so eager and ready to experience love that he just fell for the first girl he saw on the street. Faust still has an old soul but his body is young and he feels the eagerness to find love and adventures that he had been missing his whole life. The emotions that Faust felt seeing Margarethe on a street were unknown for him and at the same time so appealing and undeniable. It can be compared with youngsters first love where they are so devoted to their other half that they can’t think of anything else and are ready to do anything to see the smile on the face of their loved one. It is not said in the book how long exactly their relationship went on before Margarethe got pregnant, but it doesn’t seem much. In any case, it was not long enough to really get to know the person you are with. Faust fell for Margarethe in the first second he saw her
