Jawaharlal Nehru, former prime minister of India, expressed, “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure.” At one time, Nehru was right with his reasoning. The world once had breathtaking seas, rolling hills, and sandy beaches. However, recently, climate change has taken a toll on the glorious Earth. Those breathtaking seas? The increase of acidity in the ocean is eradicating the existence of coral reefs, and, in the future, the Earth’s waters will be less vibrant. The rolling hills? Although studies that set out to prove that global warming is a scam exist, the majority of scientific research shows otherwise. For instance, in the future, coral reefs may become scarce in parts of the ocean where they were once widespread. The EPA has reported that this is due to the increase of ocean acidification (Bradford and Pappas). Since before human life, ocean acidification levels have stayed at a fixed rate and allowed ecosystems to thrive. However, recent scientific studies have proven that an increase in acidity would gravely distress a variety of organisms (“Ocean Acidification”). Coral reefs endure trauma when substances, such as coal and oil, are burned, emitting carbon dioxide into the air. The ocean sucks in the gas which stays in the water for up to 1,000 years (Carnegie Institution for Science). If the ocean continues to take in 22 million tons of carbon dioxide a day, the pH could proceed to decrease by half a unit by the end of the 21st century.
