through dialogue, and compression, I agree it made it quite impossible to emotionally connect with this story because I didn’t feel involved with what happened in the background of the story. What led up to it?
Hemingway always involves compression in his writing. Its part of his style, I personally feel compressing the story is what makes it hard to connect. I enjoyed Hemingway’s use of dialogue in hills like white elephants, it’s approached cleanly and directly, without all the fuzzy adjectives. Hemingway stripped everything but the bare essentials. Only giving the tip of the ice burg and leaving it to the reader to reveal the rest that’s under the water.
Overall, Hemingway’s writing style personally does make it hard for me myself to connect. His writing is great for too the point and only to the point readings, but not for the emotional attachment kind of readings
