In the speech “I have a dream” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the topic of equal rights for black and white people is discussed. The author do this through stating that segregation is not still going to be a problem and that the United States will be in peace. He mentioned that the country would accepted the idea of equality but this should be achieved slowly over a long period of time. Moreover, he talked about his goal of unification like brothers and sisters. Martin Luther King ends his speech by saying “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last”. He ends with this because he knew that in a certain of moment God would help black people.
Analysis:
The author put everything together in this speech by the
things that happened in the United States like discrimination, segregation and racism. Furthermore, he gave his own wishes and opinions about the future of the country. The author is credible because he is known by his work in the United States at the head of the civil rights movement for African Americans. The article is easy to read because he explains topics that I have already known. When he said “… is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality” he refers about segregation and slavery. The article might be difficult to read because to author used complex words that make the speech illegible. The author could have included more details about his own experience to complement his point of view. The author’s purpose is that people should take awareness about what happened in segregation time and persuade all Americans to stop discrimination. A good example of this is when Martin said “… the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination”. The tone of this is enthusiastic because he uses words and expressions where it can be inferred the tone. The author’s point of view is in first person. A reader like me would be interested in this type of speech because he gives his own opinions and relates them with the situation of his country. Other kinds of people who would be interested in reading this type of speech, and was it has to say, are adults, elder people and people who lived discrimination. Overall, this speech is interesting because this is a clear expression of happiness at having achieved something that in many years the person had expected. In addition, the speech is interesting because it combines feelings, desires, thoughts and history and gives as a result that readers are interested.
