In “Test”, by Theodore Thomas, there were three points in the story where the plot suddenly changes direction, and the author uses certain tactics to make sure the readers don’t expect them. Thomas begins his story by describing the perfect driving conditions and driver. “It was a good day for driving” gets ingrained in our heads; nothing could go wrong. The audience is lead into a false sense of security, but suddenly, notice the use of that word, “a blue convertible swung out from behind a truck.” Robert Procter, the driver, noted the car and the truck in the previous paragraph, but he clearly labeled them as not a threat, he put them in the back of his mind.…
David and Jennifer are living in the age of negativity. The environment is going to hell, unemployment is going to rise, life just sucks in general. This doesn’t bother Jennifer, but David wishes his life was more like his favorite 50′s TV show, Pleasantville. He’s seen every episode to the point of memorization; so when a mysterious TV repairman gives him a remote that transports him and his sister, Jennifer, into the show; he’s thrilled, but she is not. David (now Bud) tries to get Jennifer (now Mary Sue) to play the role she’s been given in the show, and follow the plot, but she decides to change things up. Now, her modern influence starts changing the way Pleasantville citizens think, as well as changing the landscape from black and white to technicolor.…
To the residents of Pleasantville, routines are things that are followed to the letter and never, ever, deviated from. One night, when Bud/David doesn’t show up for work, his boss doesn’t know what to do. He continues to do the first thing he does every day when he comes in- wipe down the counter. He doesn’t know what to do next because Bud/David isn’t around to help with the next step. Later in the movie, Mary Sue/Jennifer runs out of the soda shop with Skip to go to Lover’s Lane. Bud/David runs after her, leaving the store with only his boss to close down. That night, the boss shows up at the Parker house and tells Bud/David that he managed to close down the store without his help, and even did things out of order! The changes in routine and thought causes a different reaction in everyone. In some people, it causes anger because they don’t know what is going on. In others, it causes them to turn from black and white to color.…
Pleasantville and The Truman Show’s story lines build on many similarities: David and Jennifer are both transported into a “perfect” world within a black and white television show where there is no fighting, no questioning of authority, there are no convictions and no fires. Truman, similarly, lives within his own “perfect” world. He has the ideal job, the blonde haired, blue- eyed slim wife, a neat home, friendly neighbours and a world where he would be safe for the rest of his life. In both shows the protagonists, Truman and the people of Pleasantville, had absolutely no worries.…
Have you ever changed your appearance in some sort of way rather it be a haircut or maybe you even lost some weight? As a result you acted in a different manor then normal, or maybe you never even realized it. In society today everyone looks to change who they really are. These changes range from changing your eye color with colored contacts all the way to changing your actual flesh through plastic surgery. The play "The Shape of Things" by Neil LaBute takes place in a college setting where everyone's striving for change. There are four characters in the play Adam, Evelyn, Phillip, and Jenny. Adam is the main character who goes through a transformation that is very clear to the reader, from a geek to a, "prep"…

The common American person found it easier to accept these myths then to challenge them. As long as they had the basic needs then they did not care about other things around them (F.D. Hunt, ACAS 125 lecture, January 28, 2008). In “Rip Van Winkle,” Irving believes things change in order to have a purpose. “Having nothing to do at home, and being arrived at that happy age when a man can be idle with impunity, he took his place once more on the bench at the inn door” (Irving. 31). Like many other Americans, Rip accepted the fact that the village and people around him had changed because things change over…

It is normal for people to change throughout the course of their lives. Sometimes the change is gradual, and other times there is a distinct moment in which it occurs. Jerry, the main focus of the story, experiences the latter during a seemingly routine vacation. Throughout the course of his rite of passage, there are many elements of the world around him which represent his evolving mindset. The seed for this change is first planted when he notices a separate bay for the first time on the way to a beach to which he has gone for many years prior.…
For example, If the subjects are youth, they do not have total control on where or when to do water sports, thus would not reflect the overall preference for sports of Mason City residents.…

Looking back and watching some of the episodes of the show I have found that it took a serious look at important issues that are still happening today. One of the episodes I watched, Mistaken Identity, portrayed a stereo typical view point. The episode started out with Will’s aunt and uncle leaving for a retreat for the law firm that his uncle works for. A very wealthy white couple…
Nrmality is quite hard to define. The line between what is considered normal and abnormal is not always clear. There are different ways to look at normality. Normal Behaviour refers to a lack of significant deviation from the average.…
An interesting topic that came about from the conversation with the respondent was cultural factors of American aesthetics. In particular, exterior home appearance and functioning. Our interviewee stated, “I do not have any particular interest in the aesthetics of a square green patch that you know, the American suburban home has.” This statement acknowledges the belief that American culture, in particular, suburban culture does have a perceived view on the way lawns and home exteriors should be presented, as “square green patches” that might be valued higher in appearance than ecological functioning. Knowing that our respondent is familiar or has encountered individuals with this mindset, allows us to assume that perhaps these values still…
