In this paper, I will be discussing Plato’s views on the roles of women and children in The Republic. I will mainly focus on Plato’s views about women as guardians and children on the battlefield. I agree with Plato’s position that women should be able to be guardians and that children should be on the battlefield because he provides sufficient evidence that women have different skills and abilities just like men, and that children could benefit from being in war. In the proceeding paragraphs, I will give background to the problems and set out the different positions on the topic. Then, I will provide the main arguments for each position, introduce objections for each of these positions, and respond to the objections. …show more content…
Plato supports this when he says, “All the capabilities with which nature endows us are distributed among men and women alike. Hence women will have the rightful opportunity to share in every task” (146). Plato would also respond by saying that the children won’t be in danger on the battlefield because they will go only on the safe expeditions and be watched by skilled officers. As mentioned earlier, Plato says that skills are distributed equally among men and women (146). This means that a woman could be better suited to be a carpenter than a man if she has the right skills. Children will benefit from being on the battlefield because when they are older they will know what being a warrior requires. Like any other job, the children must watch the warriors in action before they are ready to do it themselves. Desensitizing the children to death will make them better warriors because they will be able to perform their job without emotional or moral
