We know karma to be a chain of causes and necessary consequences in the world of human actions. Karma is the urge we have of doing something based on our previous actions or behavior. I believe the world has negative and positive energy. For example; an individual soul consists of negative and positive energy, which for a normal person, is balanced out. Therefore, what goes around comes around. In life we choose whether to listen and act upon certain urges or ignore it. I do not believe karma predetermine our future. Karma is the reason why things occur in our lives, based on the actions we have done. Karma is not built upon a distinct action but the accumulation of our conduct and actions.…

In astrology, Aries is considered a new beginning and, in turn, begins John Gardner’s novel (Heindel 163). This chapter focuses on the cyclical nature of astrology. According to Grendel, this is the twelfth year of his “idiotic war” (Gardner 5). He notes that this year will, more than likely, be just like all those before it and also says the same of the ram. The ram is the symbol of Aries (Levine). To emphasize the cycle of his life, Grendel says “So it goes with me day by day and age by age… Locked in the deadly progression of moon and stars” (Gardner 8). This quotation also includes the subtle nod to astrology. He mentions the cycle of going down to attack the village and how, afterwards, repairs will be made to the village.…

The sacrifices, the beliefs, and the values parents implant in their children will help determine the person they grow up to be. A child is like a sponge that absorbs their parent’s thoughts and viewpoints that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. A bad event can scar them for life. For example, if a parent constantly yells at their child for no reasons and shows no signs of love, the little one’s childhood would consist of nothing but bad memories. This is exactly what happened to Shelly, the Indian girl from the “Homecoming”. The female protagonist definitely suffered immensely due to the lack of parental love and the constant battles in the house. Her careless parents would never stop blaming her for every little thing causing her to run away from home at a young age. Because of the bad childhood and painful memories, Shelly turned her back against the most important person in her life; her father. By the time she started to appreciate him, it was already too late, he was on the verge of death. In the short story of the “Homecoming”, through the strong use of metaphor, symbolism and irony, Sunera Thobani stresses how a sudden can drastically alter the way one sees parental love.…
