Analysis Of Steven Pinker's Essay 'Is Google Making USupid?'
Nicholas Carr, based on his essay, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” would disagree with Steven Pinker’s “Mind Over Mass Media.” Pinker believes that technology is the only thing that keeps us smart in a society level by making it easier to be informed about everything, while Carr believes that it affects our critical thinking ability because having access to so much information makes us skim through the reading, so even though we are reading many things, it does not mean we are actually holding on to the information. Nicholas Carr believes that the web is affecting the way we receive information by making us into more of a superficial reader. The web affects the way people take in information because since is so simple to get information, people no longer go in depth when it comes to reading, this negatively affects our critical thinking since technology decreases our attention span. Carr says, “My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.” This figurative language in a form of a metaphor compares the difference between the way Carr reads comparing to now. When he says “a scuba diver in the sea of words.” He is referring of how he used to …show more content…
Pinker believes you are smart as a society and technology helps us maintain our smart. While Carr believes that your intelligence is based on your critical reading, and technology is negatively affecting the way we read. Which one is right? Well both are correct. There are many types of intelligence, you have intelligence as a group, as an individual, linguistic, musical, mathematical, interpersonal, and sports intelligence. The level of intelligence in a person cannot be determined because we all are different, and are smart at different things that others might not

Based on the essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid” written by Nicholas Carr, my opinion is that I agree with Carr’s thesis that the internet is interrupting human life. My opinion is that the internet is causing more problems than solving them. For example, I understand that the internet has websites like Wikipedia and other online sources that can help someone write a report on a war or side with a certain group about something. But, sometimes these articles on these websites can be changed by anyone who wants to. These articles sometimes have no facts that jump out to the reader.…

On July 1st 2008 an article was written by Nicholas Carr titled “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and this article was taken differently by many people. He talks about how he has problems reading ever since he discovered Google. Carr states “my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. When we search something we automatically believe what is stated on the internet because we think technology is more intelligent than people. Another think Carr touched upon is that the quality of our knowledge is being sacrificed. There is a generation that doesn’t know life without the Internet and the way that they think. Over time it is only going to get worse. Carr also makes an economic analysis of this new way of thinking and reading. “It’s in their economic interest to drive us to distraction,”…

The general argument made by Nicholas Carr in his work, “From The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains,” is that technology is dangerous to the brain, conditioning the body that they need more technology, and less of anything else. More Specifically, Carr states that, “I used to find it easy to immerse myself in a book or a lengthy article...Now my consideration starts to drift after a page or two” (Carr par. 2). In this passage, Carr is suggesting that the effects of technology and the internet have imposed on him that he needs the internet to function at a proper level. He thinks that this is going to be a problem in the future of society. He is suggesting that we will be unable to communicate…

With the increased use of the Internet in people’s lives, a person cannot help but to feel a shift in the way he or she processes information so that the passages he or she reads are given cursory attention for the sake of efficiency. There are many consequences to this type of thinking. For instance, as Nicholas Carr, the writer of “Is Google Making Us Stupid?,” states, readers are more likely to put speed and practicality above forming connections within the text, which “may be weakening [their] capacity for the kind of deep reading that emerged when an earlier technology, the printing press, made long and complex works of prose commonplace” (Carr 229). As unlikely as it seems, the way people read affects how they think. In the case of the Internet, the increase in information has shaped people to become shallow thinkers.…
