At the beginning of the story, Christopher tries to
understand the world by using logic. He follows schedules, decides what kind of day it will be by counting the numbers of colored cars, and gets really upset when things happen unexpectedly. When christopher is confronted by the police, he remarks that he “like[s] the police. They have uniforms and number and you know what they are meant to be doing” instead of being frightened, implying that Christopher has difficulty understanding other people because he doesn’t know “what they are meant to be doing”(6). Over the course of the story, we find that Christopher experiences a number of destabilizing events, such as learning that his father had fed him lies about his mother’s affair. As the story peaks, Christopher learns that his father had been hiding his mother’s affair from him and that he is the killer of wellington. His father tries to calm Christopher but instead makes it worse. “I had to get out of the house. Father had murdered Wellington.
