They feared the veil and didn’t want to except that they might have sins of their own.It starts to become a burden on the minister because he has placed all of the sins of mankind onto himself so that they don’t have to face their own sins. Even though the minister is seen as a saint and a man that can do no harm. He’s still a human being who makes mistakes. Stated in article 3, “, I look at the black veil in two ways, meaning that he could be mourning her death or he actually did commit adultery and feels bad, but wants everyone to know that even though he may be a leader he is also still a human, meaning humans accidentally sin by nature.” The minister may be taking on the burdens of others but the doesn’t exempt him from having “secret sins” of his own to hide from the image that was placed on to him. Everyone has flaws no one’s perfect.
As shown above, the black veil is a representation of the secret sins that people hide. The minister’s duty in a church is to be an image of holiness and to be nothing but good. The black veil was used as a symbol in a sermon. During this sermon the objective was to show man that sins cannot be hidden forever and will come to light. Instead of realizing that they had sins deep down that they need to face but instead was focused on the black veil and trying to figure out what the reasoning was that the good minister was wearing it. The black veil doesn’t symbolize his sins, but the burdens of everyone
