The relations between China and North Korea could previously be described as courteous and friendly. However, disputes began to arise due to China’s decisions to support the actions of the United States to level sanctions against North Korea. China and North Korea are two major parties in maintaining the international relations in North-East Asia where China is recognized as a global superpower. While, North Koreas became a serious threat to South Korea, China, and the USA as a result of its illegal development of nuclear weapons against international restrictions. In this paper, the Tri-International Relations between the U.S, North Korea, and China will be examined from the Realism, Liberalism, and Juche perspectives.

From their perspective, the international settings are made up of sovereign states which were developed by Thucydides after he was empowered by the signing of the Westphalia treaty. From the realists’ perspective, every country should exercise its rights to defend its borders, interests, and citizens (Ahmed, 2007). The conflicts in which North Korea is currently involved can be related to the realism theory noting that North Koreas decision to develop nuclear weapons is in view of protecting its interests and to discourage the invasion of its international borders. Concerns have however been raised regarding the influence of possessing nuclear weapons on a supposed uncontrollable Kim Jong-un the current North Korea leader. The realists assume that interrelations among countries are formed based on their military power and economic advantages. The realism theory can, therefore, be identified as propagating the need for a country to possess superior military power such as the nuclear weapons to gain respect among other nations while discouraging any plans to invade its territories. However, it can also be pointed out that the series of sanctions that have restricted the development in North Korea is due to its adoption of a realists approach towards international issues (Ashley, 1981). However, North Korea perceives this approach as a hindrance to achieving its aims due to the apparent alliance of the western countries with its ‘enemy’ South Korea which enjoys protection from stronger states that have more advanced nuclear weapons. The feud between North and South Korea dates back to many years ago. The countries were split following the end of the World War II. The relations between the two countries have been strained since this event. The United States has assumed a protective role over South Korea which has no known nuclear weapons but has faced threats from North Korea in moves assumed to be oppressive against South Korea. The current President of the U.S. Donald Trump has taken a stronger stand against North Korea, and it is predicted that if the ongoing tensions are not properly managed, the disputes could lead to a Third World war which will be fought with nuclear weapons. There have been reports of a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un later this year.
