The experiences of immigrants were sometimes harsh and unfair. People treated other people differently based on their ethnicity and most disagreements ended in conflict. Religion, culture, skin color, and background played a major role in the conflicts and caused harsh dialogue.
In ¨The Quilt of a Country¨ by Anna Quindlen she states that
¨America is an improbable idea. A mongrel nation built of ever changing disparate parts, it is held together by a notion, the notion that all men are created equal, and everyone knows most men consider themselves better than someone.” Quindlen means that America is different. That everyone is different and we're always changing, as people, and as a country. She also states that even though America is the ¨Land of the Free” People are still being treated as if the basic rights of America do not apply to them because of their race or beliefs. …show more content…
She says,”The U.S is a unique country and that stands for something in the world.” She means that because we are different and we come from so many cultures people know that we fought to have that freedom.
That is why we stand for the pledge and place our hands over our hearts.
America is the way it is today because of immigrants. Freedom is something that we fought very hard to have. Freedom of speech, religion, and assembly is something that we have definitely put to use. In time of crisis, people are blind. Blind to the color of skin. And we come together and put small things behind us like race and religion. America is America because of the many different kind of people that call it
home.
