It may seem as though using dogs for therapy has been around since the beginning of time, but in reality the idea of a therapy dog began during World War II when a soldier literally stumbled upon an adorable little Yorkie in an abandoned fox hole. Little did this small dog know what a huge impact she would have on helping soldiers to cope and to heal from battle wounds. Smoky was the first hospital therapy dog, and she came with high credentials approved by Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic.…

Both Dr. Berk-Clark and Dr. McGuire are with the US Department of Veterans Affairs. At the St. Louis Healthcare center (Berk-Clark) as well as (McGuire) at the West Los Angeles Healthcare center. Dr. Berk-Clark has also studied within the Department of Psychiatry and School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. When organizing the Veterans assembly I would have never thought that so many veterans and community members would be so greatly impacted. While the assembly was taking place there where many Veterans who cried throughout the event, the impact this activity had on them was that we showed them how thankful we are for the things that they did for us even when they did not know us. This impacted them because it showed them that they are people who we are thankful for because without them our country would not be the great place it is today. This activity made them see that all of their hard work and suffering was worth it, and that future generations are willing to give them the respect that they deserve.…
Veterans are more likely than civilians to experience homelessness. They experience a distinct set of challenges, both during service and upon their return, which preset obstacles when trying to tackle veteran homelessness (NAEH, 2015). Compared to nonveterans, many veterans are considered at risk of homelessness because of poverty, lack of support from family and friends, substance use or mental health issues, precarious living conditions, and have a low socioeconomic status. They are also faced with a shortage of affordable housing options and stagnating wages. As a result of serving in the military, veterans are at a higher risk of experiencing traumatic brain injuries, sexual trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (NAEH, 2015).…
There are numerous social problems that plague our world today. These issues can be very detrimental to our society as a whole and can also have very negative impacts on many lives. One major social problem we are facing today is the way we are dealing with and handling our United States Veterans. Despite the fact that we are one of the world’s most powerful nations we are failing to properly take care of our service members who put their lives on the line to ensure our safety and freedom as United States citizens. The issues facing our veterans are substantial and numerous. I will be focusing on the majority of the most outstanding and significant issues facing our veterans…
Our veterans are an important part to society. They gave their lives to protect their country every day. Though many face hard times and homelessness they are still part of society. The Department of Veteran Affairs has in place a plan to end homelessness by the end of this year. The public can lend a hand in helping to end veteran homelessness. Our veterans are falling asleep under the stars, on a bench, under a bridge, or in a tent city. Veterans are important people and our country would not be where it is without them. Even though veterans may put themselves in the situation, society and the Department…
n for these veterans defending Americans of the United States in past wars, we may not be free right now. These men and women risk their lives to our freedom, and this took a great deal of bravery and sacrifice. Many veterans even died, and I have seen on the news where many more are still dying, and families are losing their loved ones. It is very sad that many people choose to risk their lives, but they knew the risks and felt it was their duty and honor to fight on our behalf. So what is a veteran to you? Is it a soldier, a person in the air force, someone fighting in the marines? That's not what they are to me. They are fighters, answering the call of duty, responding to our prayers, and most importantly that they help fight for our country, the United States of America.…
The definition of a homeless veteran is combining being homeless and having the status of being a veteran. In 2009 President Obama and Secretary Shinseki made a commitment to end homelessness amongst veterans in 5 years. This was in collaboration with the Veterans Administration (VA). Homeless within the ranks of our veterans has been around for decades. There are many explanations why some veterans are homeless. It could be due to not receiving benefits after leaving military service, mental illness, drug and or alcohol abuse, no family or just not having a job. As you can see there are multiple reasons a veteran can become homeless. There has been study finding that homeless veterans who have experienced…
The Iraq war has ended as of December 2011. Osama Bin Laden has been killed as of May 2011 and yet the war in Afghanistan is still ongoing. The jihadist terrorism threat that our nation once feared from Al-Qaeda has diminished. Many question the justification of the United State’s involvement in the Middle East over the past decade. What have our intentions been this whole time and have the lives of those brave military men and women lost been worth the fight?…
The U.S Department Veteran’s Affairs (VA) provides a wide range of benefits for our service members, veterans and their families. Some of these benefits include but are not limited to include compensation, disability, education, and home loans. Throughout this paper I will discuss these benefits and the eligibility required to receive them. Eligibility for most VA benefits is based on type of discharge received through the military which is normally all discharges under other than dishonorable conditions.…
