Analytical Essay on 'Are You Experienced?' Album by Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix (guitarist/singer/songwriter) has completed a number of albums with several different projects and line ups, however the album which I chose to analyze in this essay is the first album of his project labeled 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience'. 'Red House,' 'Can You See Me,' and 'Remember' were not included in the US release of the album (discogs.com). Produced by Chas Chandler (former bassist of The Animals and an acclaimed record producer) who, after having seen Jimi Hendrix preform in a New York City nightclub, worked his way into becoming the producer of Hendrix's debut album along with joining the 'Are You Experienced' team as a co-manager and talent recruiter. Chas Chandler was also responsible for recruiting Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on the drums bringing together an extremely powerful trio. What we must keep in mind is that in 1967 recording technology had not caught up to the technological creative musical advancements of Jimi Hendrix and his work. It was not the digital age of digital recording DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) and editing software, but rather the analog age where everything was cut to magnetic tape and processed in a similar fashion. Panning automation and surround sound, which the album's aesthetics required, had not been invented yet. Regardless of these limitations 'Are You Experienced?' took turns and corners at great speeds without loosing a grip on the road, delivering masterpieces of sound and technique which were unheard off at the time. These recordings on a four-track magnetic tape managed to create a sound which can be achieved, now a days, with digital plug-ins and multiple recording layers on Pro Tools and Logic (audio recording software). Different studios were utilized in order to get the complete sound of the album, some of which were shaped like airplane hangars to get the natural large hall reverb sound dynamics (Egan, 62). Among the ability to preform with much ease in many other areas, the band possessed an ability to record rhythm and lead at the same time, for Hendrix was gifted with the ability to play both parts at the same time on the guitar.
