Reactions to Peasant Revolts

During a short two year period of the 16th century, the peasant class formed groups to challenge the power and argue for freedom. Dialogue turned into violence and principles such as the _Twelve Articles of the Swabian Peasants_ turned to pillage throughout the German States of the Holy Roman Empire (Doc.2). The impact was felt everywhere but in the end the uprising led to over 100,000 deaths and not much change. The peasants began the fight by arguing against being treated unfairly through actions that were imposed on them by the nobility. The nobility reacted to the peasants ' claims out of fear over the potential loss of their "workforce" and their power.

The peasants were unhappy with the decisions made by the nobles. They were also mobilized by religious preaching. They argued that since Christ gave his blood for all people not just the rich (Doc. 3) they should be treated as brothers. They felt that they shouldn 't be forced to do more work without compensation (Doc. 2). At first, people in positions of power saw reason in the ideas that the peasants advanced. As an example, Caspar Nützel, a town councilor with power, opposed the tactics of the peasants but stated that it is highly unchristian and unreasonable to take from them. He recognized the obligation of the nobles to "aid, defend and rule rather than fleece (Doc. 9). However some peasants did act rather more violently than was necessary by plundering and attacking towns and villages. On rare occasions the peasants were actually helped by commoners who opened the gates to let them attack (Doc. 5). The peasants ' main objective was to be released from serfdom. They wanted the nobility to be charitable and not use them entirely for their personal needs because they felt that the rich should share with the poor (Doc. 8).

The clergy like the rest of the population was divided. They didn 't pick one side as a whole but there were individuals who campaigned strongly for both

Historical Background in late 1524, peasants, craftsmen, and poor soldiers formed bands and pillaged throughout a large area of the Holy Roman Empire. During the revolt, some of the rebel bands authored statements of grievances called Articles. Although most bands did not coordinate their activities, several groups met in Memmingen, Swabia, during March 1525 at a gathering known as the Peasant Parliament. After a series of battles, the authorities managed to suppress the revolts. More than 100,000 rebels and others were killed. TASK 1 Deconstructing the question.     Documents 1, 4, and 5 explained the point of view of the nobility which mostly all of the nobility agreed it was negative. In Document 1the Chancellor of Bavaria wrote how he believed that the revolt was simply the belief of the time and that's why so many peasants were following the same belief. Yet the chancellor doesn't realize the side of the peasant who strive for a better life for themselves, they simply want to have more rights for the individuality.     Religious officials viewed the peasant revolts with differing views. For example, Thomas Muntzer encouraged these revolts, implying that they were God's Will (Doc 6). On the other hand, Martin Luther condemned the peasants, claiming that they were associated with the Devil (Doc 7). However, Luther's claim was influenced by his political situation. Exiled by the Edict of Worms, Luther needed the protection of nobles. Due to this, he could not support the revolts unless he opposed the nobles. What's more, Muntzer was once a follower of Luther. This further proves that Luther's position on the peasant revolts was biased, because Luther went against his original beliefs. Moreover, peasants were dissatisfied with their way of life, claiming that the rich should share what they had with the poor. They claimed that Christ had redeemed both the peasants and the Emperor with His blood (Doc 3). Thus, the peasants were hopeful that as Christian lords the nobles would free them from serfdom. Also, the peasants of Wurzburg believed that the nobles were brothers with the peasants (Doc 8). They also stated that the rich should share with the poor, especially if the rich had used the poor for monetary gains. In the end, this revealed the peasants' agitation at their situation, which led the nobles to rethink their actions. Furthermore, Caspar Nutzel said that although the peasants went too far, it was not unjustified (Doc 9). The authorities treated the peasants like sheep, using the wool for profit but neglecting to keep the sheep healthy by taking care of it.
