Analyzing Langdon Winner's 'Technambulism'
Technology shaping the world

Technology has shaped and defined human activity and it has made life easier but more dangerous. As Langdon Winner explains in his piece, Technological Somnambulism, technology is a neutral tool. It can be used in a positive or a negative way. As well, Modern technology can be dangerous in many different ways. As more technology becomes available to the public, more people rely on it. This could be a problem; for example when many people want to figure something out, they will probably just type the question into Google. Technology allows us to think less about certain things, which may be easier but it “dumbs us down”. This could be considered dangerous because we may rely on technology too much and we could become lazy with our everyday rituals. With that said, technology has also helped us improve medicine and science to help cure certain diseases. Without these improvements we wouldn’t be as strong as a community. There seems to always be positive and negative things that come with technology.

A piece of technology that is very commonly known is a nuvi; this is a GPS navigator that when you put in an address, it will give you the quickest directions to your destination. People usually use it in their cars so they can travel faster to places and so they don’t have to do it the old fashioned way by using a map. The nuvi is becoming very popular. People are buying these little GPS navigators and sticking to their windshield. I got my license two years ago and my parents leased a car for me to drive. They gave me a nuvi and put it on the windshield of the car. I didn’t use it much at first because I was only driving to places that I knew that were close by. After several months of driving and practice, my parents let me drive wherever I wanted to

I live in a world that technology is a part of every aspect of lives hence I don't feel that technology could be harmful to us. However, Brooke Gladstone and Josh Neufeld bough up an interesting point as to why other people might not be so ecstatic about technology: “Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. Anything that's invented between when 15 and 35 is new and exciting and revolutionary. Anything invented after you're 35 is against the natural order of things” (338) Gladstone and Neufeld.…

Car2go uses GPS devices to help customers locate available cars. If customers find themselves without a smartphone or internet access, they can simply walk up to a car to see if it is available. If the car is reserved, a screen on the back windshield of the vehicle gives the location of the closest available car ready for use. Guillen assures PM that privacy concerns with these monitored GPS devices have been taken into account. "We do not know where the cars are while they are being used," he says. At the same time, technological progress has also serious disadvantages. As I had already said, some people are addicted on technology. There are a lot of examples which can prove it. In my opinion, the most common example is mobile phone. It is some kind of miracle if you see a girl or a boy who is not holding his or her mobile phone in hands. People are starting to forget that the real world exists, they have only virtual one. Even if friends are walking together, they also continue to use their phones, no matter that your friend is near you and you can communicate with him in reality, not via some social network. Technology takes our free time. We prefer spend the evening in front of the computer rather than spend it with our family or friends.…
