Analyzing Sojourner Truth's Speech
I am impressed by Sojourner Truth’s wisdom and the bravery it took to speak those words, at such a tumultuous time. As a woman; particularly, a Black woman, I felt a sense of pride as I read this speech. I don’t think I could be prouder, if I were one of Sojourner’s descendants. For all I know, I may very well be, as 13 of her children were sold into slavery.
Although, I enjoyed Cicely Tyson’s performance, of Sojourner Truth’s speech; I feel, the reactions from the audience took away much of the speech’s effect. In understanding the timing and nature of this speech; I do not envision as much laughter amongst the 1851 audience. That said, I preferred the written version. Perhaps a filmed version would’ve been more effective.
