Response To Literature: City of Lost Souls The following essay is a response to literature essay on City of Lost Souls this is the fifth installment of the Mortal Instruments. This book is 535 pages long. It is written by the author Cassandra Clare. It is a young adult fictional novel. This book is set in many places including New York, Idris (a fictional city), and Alicante (also a fictional city). This novel takes place in the present. The main characters are Clary Fray, Jace Lightwood(Wayland), Simon Lewis, Sebastian Verlac A.K.A. Jonathan Morgenstern, Isabelle Lightwood, and Alec Lightwood. self conflict. In the beginning of this book Jace and Sebastian go missing. Sebastian being the evil antagonist, and Jace being one of the main protagonists this causes an uproar through the shadowhunter community. Clary eventually catches up with Jace and Sebastian but Jace is totally different. Sebastian had linked him and Jace together so whatever happened to Jace happened to Sebastian and vice versa. Jace acted just like Sebastian on the outside but couldn’t control it. This is an example of internal conflict because Jace knew what he was doing was wrong but he couldn’t control it. In the rising action Clary infiltrates Sebastian’s operation when Jace convinces him to let her come with them because throughout what Sebastian did to him he still loved Clary. So Clary brought one of the Fairy Queen’s rings, which she had previously stolen, which allowed her to communicate with Simon (who she had given the other ring to). The main climax is when Sebastian finds out that Clary is a spy and he rushes to finish his plan which is to create a race of opposite-shadowhunters. Clary tells Simon to get all the shadowhunters to the site where Sebastian is going to make the opposite-shadowhunters. But by the time they arrived it was too late. Sebastian had already made about forty opposite-shadowhunters. This causes an all out battle. In the end Clary stabs Jace in the heart with a sword, given to Simon by the angel Raziel. But
