W.W. Jacobs “The monkeys paw”
W.W. Jacobs is considered to have written “one of the most popular horror stories ever written” (“Hoppenstand, Gary: 1998 151-163” 1). In addition W.W. Jacobs “Used to be regarded as a master of the humorous short story during his life time.” (“Hoppenstand, Gary: 1998 151-163” 1). Jacobs “was a reclusive writer who spurned publicity yet whose work attracted the public imagination.” (“Bowman, Michele: 1997 1800-1920” 1). This short story’s publication in 1902 from The lady of the barge “The monkey’s paw” was one of the most horrific short stories ever written. (W.W.). The short story “The monkey’s Paw” begins with the White family awaiting a guest. When the guest (Sergeant-Major Morris) finally arrives he brings a monkey’s paw with him. He explains to the White family about its magical powers but warns them it comes with grave consequences. Eventually the White family end in possession of the paw after the Sergeant had attempted to destroy it in the fire. He warns them once more about its consequences but they don’t listen to his warnings. Mr. White uses the paw to wish for 200 pounds. Jacobs married Agnes Eleanor Williams in 1900. Together they had a good home, and where able to have a daughter. W.W. Jacobs was well off and was able to afford a domestic servant and a cook. In the early nineties Jacobs had some of his stories published in Jerome K. Jerome and Robert Barr’s illustrated satirical magazines. W.W. Jacob’s first early stories were tentative and naïve but they were more than enough to show that they had a promise upon further development in a career as a writer. W.W. Jacobs died on September 1 of 1943. He is buried at Honsey Lane, islington, London. Today he is still very well known for his huge success “The monkeys
