Sports were very important to the Ancient Greeks. They had contact and noncontact sports. Their biggest event that they had were the Olympics, because that was where they could show off their skills in the different sports. That is the first example of how the cultural contributions of ancient Greece formed the basis of western civilization, as we still do the Olympics today. We may have more games than they did, but many of the events are the same. Two of their biggest contact sports were wrestling and boxing, which they performed at the Olympics. These two sports are very important to us today too, and they are a big part of the modern world’s culture. (We also have them in our Olympics.) Most of their contact sports are still played and loved today. A few examples of them are running, javelin, …show more content…
discus, and long jump. We must thank the Ancient Greeks for most of the sports that we play and watch for enjoyment today.
Next, we come to Myth/Religion. The Greek’s whole lives pretty much revolved around the gods and goddesses. For example, the Parthenon, a very famous Greek ruin/temple, was dedicated to the goddess Athena. All of the gods and goddesses have memorable statues and temples dedicated to them. The reason that the gods and goddesses connect to modern culture is that modern products use them in their logos and names. For example, the brand Nike is based after the goddess NIke. Also, the music company, Pandora Radio, was based after the first woman in Greek mythology. Pandora’s box was a box that contained all of the evils of the world, and when Pandora opened it, all of the evils were released into the world and the only thing that remained inside of the box was hope. Another way that the gods and goddesses connect to modern western civilization is that we still learn about them. The best selling series of Rick Riordan are all about Ancient Greek gods. That is how Ancient Greek myth relate to modern culture.
Lastly, I will talk about how the Daily Life of the Ancient Greeks contributed to form the basis of western civilization.
Firstly, the clothing that they wore is kind of like the clothes we wear today. They wore cloaks, chitons, and hats. We sometimes wear coats and ponchos that are like cloaks. Some of our dresses today are based off of the general design of a chiton, and we wear hats sometimes, too. As you can see, many of the clothing items that the Greeks wore developed into things we have today. Another way that Ancient Greek Daily Life relates to modern culture is their food that they ate. They ate three meals a day, generally with family. They ate bread, cheese, meat, fish, and soup, and they drank water, but mostly wine. They loved alcohol. All of these ideas still are in use by us today, and have morphed into classic modern dishes. Today, we use many of these ideas and more of their Daily Life
today.
As you have read, modern day people use many of the ideas that the Ancient Greeks created or built upon in everyday life. Most of these times, however, we don’t realize that we are! We used the Greeks’ ideas of Sports to generate our modern day sports. We use their ideas to gods, goddesses, and myth to learn about their culture and to buy products. Lastly, we use their concepts on Daily Life to basically live our lives. Now you know a few of the ways the Ancient Greeks formed the basis of western civilization.
