One would be lucky to visit this place because it is absolutely breathtaking. I say this from experience, because I had the opportunity to walk the land Jesus Christ once walked. Studying ancient Israel is one …show more content…
thing, but actually being there and feeling the perfect temperatures of the Mediterranean sea, or touching the cold limestone of the Wailing Wall is an incomparable experience. To know that many Christian churches and colleges near you are providing a way for people to experience this great place. Providence Christian College is one place that is offering an Avodah Immersion, whose destination is Israel. Therefore, let me discuss some information about this trip, and give some easy pointers on how to to have an enjoyable adventure.
Providence Christian College is known for their Avodah Program, which really focuses on culture and cultural expressions in and around the city of Los Angeles. However, the college decided to expand the range of travel so that students could observe totally different environments of other countries. Immersions such as these not only put the student in a different atmosphere, but also allows them to fully understand the world that God has made by understanding other people groups and what makes them distinct. The last time Providence visited Israel, a group of colleges finest members including students, professors, staff, and parents decided to take the journey to God’s chosen land. The trip was lead by two important key members, one being Sheila, the tour guide, and the other known as Dr. Scott Swanson. These two provided the information of every site visited, and taught about the importance of each. Dr. Swanson said it was the most memorable places they visited, including the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, and Masada. The immersion was very enjoyable for the Sea Beggars, and junior Sean Rhoads said one of the most interesting things they learned on the trip was the political state of affairs between Israelis and Palestinians. It is fair to say that a trip like this is one to be remembered forever.
Israel is an enjoyable historical site, but many may call it one of the most dangerous places in the world. People may ask questions regarding the trip to Israel, such as how could you guarantee safety, how much is the cost, and where are most important places to visit? Israel would not exactly be a place where a parent typically wants their child to be because of war, religion, and unfamiliar environments. So therefore, the question that one should consider is, why go to Israel? In a recent interview, I talked to Max Belz, the director of the Avodah Program, about how great of an experience a trip to Israel would be. People often want to travel for the sightseeing, so I asked Max what specific places they would visit and why. Max replied, “ Our three main locations are the Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and the Sea of Galilee. Specific sites include Magdala, Hamat Gader, Mt. Tabor, Cable Car Massada, Mt. Olives, Bethlehem, Pools of Bethesda, Western Wall Tunnel, Israel Museum...these sites are memorable because they connect us to the times of the Old Testament, adding a physical perspective to our Biblical framework. In addition, students will get a sense of contemporary Israel.” As much fun as this trip may seem, there has to be some sort of challenge that may be faced. Max answered, “ We hope that students' health remains strong and that our travel to Israel is safe.” From experience in Israel, I know that this trip involves a lot of walking and trying to keep hydrated, but it is well worth it. Just this past year, Providence has traveled to lovely places such as Rome. Rome and Israel are a long way from home, and they are both different from any other particular Avodahs. What makes this Avodah different than the trip to Rome? This final question was answered by Max when he said, “ This is different from a trip to Rome because the focus is more on Biblical history and times, rather than on western civilization. Also, this trip is heavily guided by in-country experts and our itinerary is pretty carefully planned for the whole time we are there.” As you can see here, there are plenty of reasons to travel to Israel, because it will be a trip of a lifetime. Max Belz and Providence Christian College highly encourages anybody who wants to observe the ancient biblical lands to go on the trip.
All of these students that will be going to Israel will be first-timers.
I did not get the opportunity to experience Israel with Providence, but I have been to the great land. To be honest, there is nothing that could ever be compared to it. When I was a senior in High School about three years ago, I found out about the Israel trip that seniors get to attend. I thought to myself, “ Well sure, why not?” Now, I will admit, I had no idea what I was getting into. I wondered to myself, “ Who the heck is going to pay for this?” Let me give some advice for the ones who are thinking about traveling to Israel. The first step is the fundraising process. You should be committed and dedicated because it will not be easy. Selling chocolates, baking, car washes, and even helping a senior citizen walk her dog are all great examples of making money. Another great tip for making money is actually getting a job. It could be the easiest job, such as working in your local school’s library. I’m not going to lie, I had a very big donation from a rich fellow. Asking for donations may seem rude and demanding, but it doesn’t hurt to ask because a person could be really intrigued by your enthusiasm to go on this incredible journey. Once your fundraising plans are accomplished, it is time to move on to step two. Buying the required supplies needed for this trip is one of the best parts because it brings a great deal of excitement. Israel is not the coldest place on earth, so on this trip you will need the following: tons of sunblock, WATER, hats, sunglasses, one of those cool water bottles with a mister, a camelbak, and light-colored clothes. There is tons of walking, so make sure to bring very comfortable shoes, and not vans. Last but certainly not least, bring a camera because there are so many beautiful sights and attractions that you will want to remember . Another helpful word of advice is to download a messaging app on your mobile device, because Israel will charge
you for international messaging and calling. Also, bring spending money because you are literally going to want to buy everything, and I mean everything. I had the idea that the soda Sprite would taste differently because I was in another country. That cost me about 5 more dollars there then it would have cost me in the United States, and this would lead me to my next tip; be wise with your money. Finally, just have a great time because it will literally be one of the most memorable excursions you ever take.
Israel is amazing and unique. I would highly recommend for students to consider this immersion because it is unregrettable. Providence Christian College is offering something so surreal and extraordinary. I would describe this Avodah as a trip of a lifetime because it offers you a different perspective. This immersion does not only provide the opportunity to explore a different side of the world, but it could change your life. Observing the exact places in the Bible are finally revealed to your eyes, and your faith may becomes stronger. Therefore, I have given you a few pointers on how to make this trip successful, and it is never too late. Make that choice and sign up for this year’s Israel Avodah Immersion now!
