The games declined in popularity after this time due to increased roman influence in Greece. There is no official date as to when the games ended however many people believe it was in 393AD. This was due to the ban of any pagan cults by the emperor at that time, Theodosius I.
After the demise of the ancient Olympic games, many events used the term Olympic in their titles. One of the first recorded was "Cotswold Olimpick Games". These Cotswold games were held every year in Chipping Campden, England. The Meetings involved many sporting events and were first organized by a lawyer named Robert Dover. Another example of this is between 1862 and 1867 the city of Liverpool began to hold a Grand Olympic Festival. The fore fathers of this festival were John Hulley and Charles Melly. These games were unique because of their 100% amateur competition.
Despite these games and festivals featuring “Olympic” in their titles, official re boot was not until over 20 years later. The Modern Olympic Games started in the summer of 1896. The 1896 games were held in the birthplace of the original games, Athens Greece. The location was agreed upon unanimously during a congress that was organized by the French historian Pierre de Coubertin, on June 23rd 1895.
